Fate,
I was advised to read that book recently as well. I really liked it, but I had some probelms with the idea of the "new" gods being so powerfull in the US. Perhaps that is because I am somewhat ruled by technology and the like, but I was uncomfortable at what I read in places.
That being said, I found American Gods to be very engaging and well written. I particularly like how the main character (sorry name escapes me and I cna't find my copy to verify) is grown from a released prisoner who only wants to get his life back, to the desciple(?) of Odin.
I am just getting through Tom Clancy's The Bear and the Dragon for the third or fourth time. I read this in preperation for Red Rabbit, which I have just obtained. If I like the e-text that I have, I will purchase the book. But with Courtesy's less than emphatic approval I will read through a few chapters first.

Marv -
I have decided to give up on Red Rabbit. If you would like I could snail mail it to you, and if you liked it you could pay me for it.
Also, just finished Dorsai! by Gordon R. Dickson, great book - much like Starship Troopers but in a more global sense. I am now in the process of purchasing all the Dorsai books on eBay, as they are all out of print.
Currently reading Cryptonomicon, excellent so far, and have Snow Crash lurking in the wings.

Stephenson is, for all intents and purposes, my favourite author now. Cryptonomicon being his bext, Snow Crash being a close second. Diamond Age is good, but it is a little far fetched. But if you read it after Snow Crash you can see how the books can almozt be considered serial.

Got to agree with you there. I love Stephenson's work as well and Cryptonomicon is a brilliant read. I'm currently reading an earlier novel called Interface which he wrote with the collaboration of somebody called Frederick George, an uncle I think. Only a quarter of the way through yet but it's already a compelling read with some good ideas taking current technology and political climates in some interesting directions.
Anybody read the other book of his I've spotted in the shops, another early book called Zodiac ?

I am going to read it on my trip to Canada in a week and a half. I have no idea what it is about beside a vague recollection that it has something to do with environmentalisim. I hope it is not another Monkeywrench Gang...
Courtesy. If I like what I read in my extext I may take you up on the offer. I have not brought myself to read it all yet.

I must agree that what I have read of Cryptonomicon is great, it will be interesting to see how he runs with the characters. I just love an author who takes the time to establish characters and motivations.
Metal Chicken - great to hear from you again.
