Seems to me some of us might already have WAP-enabled phones or other devices (is a Palm VII, for instance, WAP-enabled?), and it might be useful to compile a list.
Or maybe someone at an appropriate WAP support site has already compiled such a list.

Is WAP service available in the US and Canada? And what about WAP hardware? And furthermore, how does on obtain a WAP compliant web server -- because those new functions sound good. And (to complicate this line of questioning) if WAP service is available in Canada, but WAP hardware isnt, where can I send you money to make one come my way. (I mean I new this was coming, but I had no idea it would be coming so fast -- am I the only one who is this exited about this!!!!!!!!! I mean, this is earth, shattering, world changing stuff!!! WOW! I mean WOW!!). Kay Im done now
I dont care how many squids I have to fork up, I needs me Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I honestly dont know how I got along without one!

Both Nokia and Ericsson have WAP 1.1 phones shipping in Europe now for GSM networks, the Nokia 7110 and I can't remember the Ericsson model number. Motorola will have one shortly, a StarTac model, for GSM. There are several WAP 1.0 handsets in the U.S., which use the Phone.com microbrowser, including two that Sprint PCS is selling. I believe Bell Mobility is selling the Neopoint 1000, which is a WAP 1.0 handset. Manufacturers of 95 percent of the world's handsets are members of the WAP Forum and all of them will have WAP phones in the next year. Motorola says they won't make a handset starting in 2000 that doesn't have the microbrowser in it.

Whoops. Sorry CrazyOne, but none of the Palm devices is WAP compatible. They may be in a future edition, but not yet.

Get thee ready to fork out some dough if you want a WAP server. Only two companies make them that I know of: Phone.com in Silicon Valley and Nokia in the land of everything wireless. Question is, why would you want one unless you're a carrier or a multi-national company?

I have a Qualcomm 2760 on the Sprint network. And it doesn't seem to be WAP, even though it *does* work on Sprint's "Wireless Web" service. That's what I was trying to figure out about really.

dunno if there's a WAP browser for Palm's. I wouldn't be surprised if there was. It's effectively just a mini version of Netscape/IE.
If you want to see what a web site looks like in WML, go to www.phone.com and download their WAP SDK. It includes a phone simulator which is a rather funky program that shows a working WAP phone on the screen of your PC. H2G2 works pretty well with it.

Nokia 7110 and ericsson r320, neither of which are on general sale yet. got to www.vodafone.ent, there is a wap faq and the option to register your wap site in their directory. you can access the h2g2 wap site through the vodafone wap gateway.

I do believe Orange are flogging the 7110's now, for 120GBP. I'm considering one, but it's a lot of dosh for a currently limited service.

Put me on the list of the Sprint 'wireless web' people that would really like to know if it works on that. I suppose I could call Sprint, but that involves actually *doing* something.

£120 is not too much for the Amazing Nokia 7110.
I am over the moon with mine, a superb performer.
If anybody out there is hesitating then stop, go to your nearest Orange dealer and demand one!
You will NOT regret it, I promise.

apparently you can access all the generall wap sites through a gateway such as www.fonedata.com for local call rates on your mobile. So you won't be restricted to just the measily orange media site. However I am yet to get this to work as I've only just signed up.

I agree, the offering from ORANGE is very poor at the moment, I have failed miserably to use oter WAP servuce providers and Orange have not gone out of their way to show you how. That is a dastardly shame, as then tey would sell more phones! The NOKIA 7110e is an absolute darling, a must! Worth every penny!!

There's a reasonable list at http://www.gelon.net/devices/ but I know that it's missing a few like Samsung and Motorola (who have definitely designed WAP phones but probably haven't released them yet).

and there's another list of WAP 1.1 capable phones on http://www.cellular.co.za/wap.htm (look for the WAP hardware section towards the bottom of the page)

Hey I paid £500 for my Nokia 7110, as it wasnt linked to a particular phone company, and I dont regret it much. As for the point about Palm's et al. Most of these handheld PDA's have their own web browsing software which is better than WAP. My Psion 5 is a life saver when Dodgy WAP portals dont work and i can connect from any ISP number, I personally use a freeserve account, ( cos it's free ), to access my e-mails and the web when away from home.

I'm thinking of buying a WAP phone but don't have a particularly large budget... (I'm a student!) I've just searched around a bit but can't find any sites that list phone prices. Can anyone give me a rough guide? (what your phone is, how much it cost, how much the service & other running costs is)

My Nokia 7110 costs £120 with a connection or as an upgrade. £430 without!! Personnally I'm on Orange, their plans run from £30 a month for 50 mins of calls a day free, or about £15 a month for 30 mins free calls a month, see http://www.orange.co.uk/ . Problem is demand is high for these phones and you may have to order one and wait a while, up to months or if you live in a city be prepared to hunt one down. Can't tell you how much the other phones are but I think its around the same. Best place to go is to the websites of the phone suppliers ( Orange, Vodafone etc.)
