In the introduction to the Bantam Classic edition of Brave New World( which by the way is a great book) Huxley provides some very interesting and I think at least partaly correct ideas on this subject. The main one is that technological progress can be good but currently isn't as good as it could be beceause we allow it to control us when it should be the other way around.

Can you provide some example of technology controlling us instead of the contrary?
