I have just cooked a chook in a pot in the oven. According to the sainted Hugh (F-W) it should have taken 50 mins plus 35 mins.

smiley - erm After 2hrs 15mins it is finally done

Why did it take so long? I'm befuddled....

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Sounds like maybe you need to invest in an oven thermometer Fb.

It's a chicken, Hyp smiley - chick

This doesn't exactly help matters, but I've noticed that chook-cooking times in cookbooks are never, ever right. Sometimes they're not even plausible. I thought it was just me... Or maybe we have heat-resistant poultry here, Fb.

smiley - eureka Heat-resistant poultry smiley - ok That would explain it smiley - biggrin

An oven thermometor is a cracking idea, Gosho smiley - ok Thank you.

It was a free-range, organic, cornfed (and very expensive) chicken, of which I had High Hopes. Although it was deliciously moist, it was disappointingly tasteless smiley - cross

The last time I had a really decent chicken was Charlie Casserole, made from a rooster than friends of mine dispatched to the great chicken run in the sky. They let his carcass hang for 2 days and then made it into the most delicious stew smiley - drool

I have a feeling that shop-bought chook will never match Charlie and of course the solution to that is to start keeping my own chooks smiley - erm Possibly...

By the way, it's good to see that there are still some folk subscribed to this page smiley - ok

A good oven thermometer is worth its weight in gold. I wondered why my cakes took so long to bake and came out flat as a nun's smiley - tit until I bought one of these devices and found that the actual temperature inside my oven was 75° less than the dial said it was smiley - cross

I might hunt down a thermometer too, next time I'm near the hilariously pretentious yet oddly affordable kitchen gadget shop.

And I'd forgotten all about this page. smiley - flustered It has been a long time, hasn't it?

The Circle compound has been seriously neglected. Thanks for starting a new thread, Fb.

Chicken is one of those things you simply can't eat underdone. The thought turns my stomach. And I've suffered with an oven that didn't heat to the temperature on the dial, also. You definitely need an oven thermometer.

Oven thermometor is now on my shopping list (also known as the Frenchbean's Memory smiley - laugh).

Pork's the other thing you can't eat underdone - something to do with tapeworms if I remember rightly smiley - erm

Lovely to see you about, Hyp smiley - smiley You are missed.
