Douglas Adams' Best Book

Douglas Adams has written a number of great books. The five books of the Hitchhiker 'Trilogy', the Dirk Gently series, Last Chance to See and The Salmon of Doubt (I might have forgotten some - it's late)

Which do you think is the best? Which of the HHGG trilogy is the best? Which of the Dirk Gently books is best? Etc.

Personally, I like Last Chance to See best of them all, and of the HHGG trilogy, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish is best. Haven't finish the Dirk Gently series though.

Anyway, does anyone have any opinions on this great man's works?

You're going to make me go back and reread all these books so I can give you an intelligent answer, aren't you. smiley - winkeye

I loved the entire Hitchhiker series. To be honest, though, I wasn't as fond of Salmon of Doubt.

I respectfully differ from your opinion that 'So Long and thanks for all the fish' was the best of the series. I found that last one a light and insubstantial read, much less enjoyable than the first two of the Hitchhiker series.

For me, the hitchhiker series of books, in order of the best, goes-

1- So Long, And Thanks for All the Fish
2- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (first one)
3- Mostly Harmless
4- Life, The Universe and Everything
5- The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

I don't like the second one. I find it hard to follow.
The fourth one could very well be my favorite because I read it in two sittings on a hotel balcony in Florida smiley - cool I might be biased that way.

I thought 'The Salmon of Doubt' had great potential. smiley - blueBut sadly. . .

I would have to say my favourite book was the first Hitchhiker one. I quite liked the Restaurant at the end of the universe too. Though perhaps the TV series and the radio series is clouding my opinions on that a little.

Though I have to say I liked both the Dirk Gently novels. Though in both of them I'm still not 100% certain what happened at the end. I guess I can talk with the ending I produced for 168 smiley - laugh (not a comparison by the way smiley - yikes)

I have never seen any of the tv series. Was it shown in the states? I wonder if it is available on video or dvd?

We have it on DVD and video at work. That doesn't help you though, as you live on the other side of the world. smiley - sorry

The video would not be compatible with your American system, Hypatia.
Glad to hear it is coming out in film.

I don't have DVD but the pressures are on to get one - I'm having my cine films copied into DVD format.

I read the hitchiker's guide and the restaurant at the end of the universe - no doubt a film would blend all of the hitchiker series into one.

Last chance to see was really good.
The Salmon of Doubt is the book I owe the biggest debt to.
It told me how to make a good cup of tea and directed me to this site. It was comforting to hear (audio book) his thoughts on Atheism and religion. We Athiests are thought of as Devils in these parts so most input is negative and condemning. An intellegent spokesman is a breath of fresh air.
He deserved every word of praise and every tear that was shed for him.
Thanks Douglas smiley - cry
