Gosh I can't believe I've not come across this before - I think I'll have a poke around..

Welcome Z. It's great to see you here. We haven't been open very long. And I haven't been spending as much time as I should keeping things going. A few RL things have been occupying my time.

Darn real life - getting in the way everywhere! I may indulge in some mutal linking and publicity for this place, it worked fairly well at the Forum.
I'm on study leave, and so far I have a nice tidy flat, my flying is coming on really well, and I've been to an opera.

I feel dreadful about not sending you your box of seeds. I had good intentions. Really. Are you still interested in gardening?
F has 2 doctor's appointments Wednesday and another one on Monday. Maybe we can get himstraightened out and I won't have so much caregiving to do.
The gliding sounds wonderful. That's something I've always wanted to do.

Yes I am still intrested in gardening, and that reminds me I have some Harqulin flower corns to plant when I can get hold of a pot to put them in. I'm tempted to use my bucket, but then I do need that the change the 's water.
Well if you're ever passing Stratford I could get you a trial lesson at guest rates .. oh and we're near Mary Ardens House - where Shakespears mother lived (- it's the same train station - I often see plenty of USians on the train).

Do you mean the Harlequin marigolds? They're really pretty. They don't need a deep container. Marigolds and most annual flowers have shallow roots.
Containers can be really expensive. Plants like to grow in the old fashioned clay pots and they are usually less pricey.
You're very creative. So get creative with containers for plants. If you know someone who works at a fast food restaurant, ask them to save you some pickle containers. They're good to grow tomato plants in. Be sure to poke holes in the bottom for drainage. YOu can actrually use about anything that has drainage and will hold dirt.

I've had a good examine of my kitchen and there's nothing I could really salvage to grow plants in, I've tried..
I think it will be a trip to a shop selling cheap plastic containers which is a shame, which involved going out and spending money !
I'm busy hooting continually and convincing myself I'm studying..

Oh, ahem. Welcome, Z
I could've sworn we put you on the invite list for here.
Hyp, did you make a silly?
(don't let me interrupt the conversation by the way... I find interrupting it hurts my lurking fun)

I'm not a lurker at all, quite the opposite, I find it almost impossible to lurk a conversation without posting to it. Same as in real life - keeping my mouth shut is rarely done, I'm not very good at being shy!

Really?
Wow. I'd say I post in less than a quarter of the conversations I read (you must understand, I monitor every conversation with the word UG, UnderGuide, UnderGuide, underguide, underGuide or UNDERGUIDE in it, and that takes a lot of lurking )
*guilty look*

Humm? I go through phases where I have more time on h2g2 when I do lurk a lot, and actively keep a fingure on the pulse and monitor what's going on.
To be honest I suppose I do tend to generally know what's going on. But then again I am on a good few yahoo groups - and I do have a quick skim of the nastier feedback conversations now and then.

J Posted Mar 29, 2004
Nasty conversations are great fun to lurk through. I guess I've been on h2g2 long enough so that I have stopped being outraged by nasty people and have started to become amused by them.
"Hey! Look at this one. He's jumping up and down about some typo! Wow. Lookee. Look at him dance!"

Hypatia Posted Mar 29, 2004
Buy, if someone gets upset over typos, they'd better not lurk on any of my conversations.
Z, I know a woman who had some regular concrete blocks with the holes for mortar. She filled the holes with soil and planted flowers in them. On flower per hole. When they grew they covered the concrete and it looked really nice. Course you have a second floor flat, which would make that difficult.
You can use the one gallon plastic milk or water cartons. Just cut the tops off and poke holes in the bottom. And if you know someone with some old baskets that they don't want, you can line them with plastic and plant in them.

In fact I was watching an Opera with two h2g2ers yesterday, for some reason we all admited to loving watching flame wars - they're such a great spectator sport.
But I don't like seeing h2g2 tainted..q

>>But I don't like seeing h2g2 tainted
Au contraire (not sure of the spelling, but I doubt this will erupt into a 'taint' ).
I think flame wars are an absolutely essential part of h2g2. We all need to air out our greivances once in a while. People resolve issues, they make friends, they get to yell, they get to scream and feel superior in flame wars. And of course, as a spectator sport, as you say, they're unmatched.
I'm not sure why flame wars have such a bad name around here...

Z Posted Mar 29, 2004
Yes that's true, though I've never made a friend through a flame war - I have discovered that some people are just annoying about it!
I was thinking earlier that I might actually be an established feature on this site, I've been here so long..
Ok I'm not pre BBC with a five digit user number..

J Posted Mar 29, 2004
I know I've become friends with a few people because of flame wars. People who shared my opinion, of course.
Established feature eh? It is a bit scary when you realize (ignoring that we skipped a few thousand during SSO) that the new newbie U-numbers are three times as large as ours!
If I ever turn (or have turned, even) into a haughty, old know-it-all who finds the presence of newbies repulsive, smack some sense into me, okay?

Z Posted Mar 29, 2004
I know, we skipped the 3's and 4's didn't we and went straight onto fives.
But U numbers aren't h2g2 only any more, so they don't mean so much. Another thing I was thinking about h2g2 is that I'm enjoying it more than I ever have - and it's working as a site and community better than it ever has.

Not me. It peaked for me around September - just before Petunia Garsh, I miss them Pre-Petunia days.
But the EG is, I agree, functioning better than I ever have seen it. Thanks in part to the dutiful service of scouts such as yourself. *tips hat*

but it's also due to the fact that we don't have to constantly deal with unsuitable submissions.
And also that the picks that we're getting are of considerably better quality.
As far as I remember the main difference _for me_ bettween now and pre Petunia, has been that now we have less EG articles on the front page - and the meets aren't organised by the italics.
Of course that may be different for you.
