Space travel is never a waste of time. To go fast enough to get anywhere intertesting you would need to go really really fast. For those on the ground it takes for ever waiting for anything to happen (so there is no loss). For those on the spaceship it all happens at the speed of light so there is eveything to gain.
Obviously we may miss things while we are off galavanting around the universe but such is life...
