I don't know if it's the same in English, but in French the three types of lighthouses are called heaven, purgatory and hell :
- heaven if on land,
- purgatory if on an island,
- and hell if at sea.

I nave never seen a lighthouse in the UK but the Great Lakes region in the US has plenty of them. Traveling west From Lake Ontario they become more plentiful. Lake Erie has about 30 lighthouses, Lake huron has more than 30, lake Superior has over forty and lake Michigan has over 70. they have been building tese since 1804. The lighthouse at the sraits of Mackinaw which I visited a couple years ago was decommissioned in 1957 because the 47 metre tall Mackinaw Bridge made it unnecessary. The bridge is lit 24 hours a day and contains other navigational aids like GPS. That Museum now stands as a museum.
In the Past there were even Lightships that sat at anchor performing the same task as lighthouses.

There's a romanticism about lighthouses, Victoriana? The fact that modern technolgy has made them redundant makes them even more evocative. As a young boy I used to listen to the the BBC shipping forecast on radio from the warmth of my bed and imagined what conditions were like out there on the coastal waters in all weathers and seasons. Wonderful.

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship. Posted Feb 25, 2011
And the last to go automatic was North Foreland lighthouse, Thanet, Kent. I use a pub in Broadstairs when I'm visiting Broadstairs and drink with the last keeper who, the last time I saw him, was still giving guided tours... but not for me. I hate heights with a passion. And it's a very squat lighthouse!!!
