Does the Mystery Item allow the to determine what stone is used in a given piece of jewelry?
Obviously, that wouldn't be quite enough: if all our aristocrat's jewelry is made of the same stone, knowing which one it is would be of no use for to pick the most valuable one.

Ah, and *near* pitch-black -- does this mean the contraption doesn't work in full-blown pitch darkness, or was it just for the sake of dramatic consistency?

No acid is involved HD.
(and you know what, I had acid klaxoned but then changed my mind, and Taff's got a QI out of it, and you keep a positive score, why did I second guess myself )

>>No acid is involved HD.<<
Lucky that you are an expert punctuator, so that we can be sure you didn't mean: "No, acide is involved, HD."
So the Item allows you to pick the better bit of jewelry no matter what it is? Does it have to be jewelry or would it work with, say, paintings?

Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Dec 13, 2009
No it isn't.

So the Item allows you to pick the better bit of jewelry no matter what it is?
Well obviously it does depend on what it is, as that is what this QI is really about. What item would allow you to discriminate between jewellery of different types to discover the most valuable.
And no it wouldn't work with paintings.

Could the mystery item be the insurance agent, who would know which items are the most valuable and where they are stored?
QI - All that glitters....
Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Dec 13, 2009
Hmmm no it's not a person.
But let's give you a DGI for >>know which items are the most valuable<<

I was just wondering why you had specified King Wossname, and I reckon that at the time when he ruled there must have been something more precious than rubies, gold etc. Is it pepper, nutmeg or somesuch?
