This looks great! Lots of nostalgia value here, .
One little quibble for you: seems a bit harsh to leave the wonderful Bernard C off the 'famous presenters' list only to name him as the single most prodigious presenter!
I remember as a kid listening to him reading The Hobbit, doing the voices of the three Trolls in the clearing; ah, nostalgia!
Of course, even nostalgia...
... just ain't what it used to be!

Hmmm.
Good point.
I was wondering whether it was worth mentioning him and Kenneth Williams twice, or just to give them their own sub-list, since they're not as uber-famous as the others on the main list.
I'll make the edit and see how it looks.

Great entry!
I can't speak for anyone else, but I used to watch the episode each Monday, and if I liked the story I'd keep watchng of the week. But if I didn't like the sound of the story, I wouldn't bother to watch till the next Monday.
For some reason the reading of 'The Iron Giant' still sticks in my head. It was Tom Baker doing that one, wasn't it?

Great entry Gradient
Jackanory was part of my childhood. Since I was/am a real bookworm, I listened whatever the story was - and usually had to go out to the library and get the book as well
What time was it on? I seem to remember 4ish? Or was it after Watch with Mother after lunch?
Why was it called Jackanory? I think there's a story there, but can't remember what it is
One typo: - should be

Why was it called Jackanory?
Oooo. GOOD question. I think I can answer it and I think I will add that to the entry once I'm certain.
I'll fix the typo too.
AFAIK, the show was aired mid-way through the afternoon kiddie programmes so four-ish sounds right. Watch with Mother had the lunchtime slot.
I should add that to the entry as well. Thanks for the prompts, Frenchbean, much appreciated!

Think I got all the typos...
Plus! The definition of Jackanory and some asides have been added as footnotes.

Two teensy little pick-ups and I'll be eager to accept this one.
1. TV programme names should be in italics as well as the books.
2. Single inverted commas for quotes, please
Aside from that - superb!

Thank you kindly for the pickups, Jimster, I shall fix those today!
hehe...gotta love Peer Review.

Bernard C and Kenneth W not Uber Famous.
In the 1970s they had two of thje most recognised voices in Britain. There was no mistaking Kens multi-syllabic syllables and Bernie apart from cropping up in Fawl;ty Towers the othe night, was th voice of the Hornby Ads, the singer of Right Said Fred (another Cup of Tea) and other little ditties, and also the voice over for many cartoon series etc as well.
Not Uber Famous!!!!
The yoof of today know nothing.

That Kenneth Williams is a comedy god (and a damn fine actor to boot) is not in dispute.
That Bernard Cribbens narrated the childhood of a generation is also not in dispute.
Ohhh no. I would not be so foolish as to suggest such.
But, I would point out to M'learned fellow researcher, they are not nor were they ever the stars of major Hollywood productions...nor were they ever elevated to the status that they deserved.
I think Bernard C should get a knighthood at least. Damn fine chap.

Hmmm. Perhaps a project for the near future.

Lovely Entry, Gradient.
Reading through the list of comments, it struck me how nice it would be to have Jackanory back again, with exactly the same content and presenters (air the some programs again; why not?), for a grown-up audience - say at bedtime. Wouldn't that be nice! I know I'd be a regular viewer.

I quite agree JTG.
It was a triumph of the BBC and it could be revived, and although I have my doubts about the potential success of the format these days I do have a nostalgic yen to see it return.
