*blushing*

The two of you are far too kind. It's great to know that no time is too late.
I peered across the sand and saw Looney on the pier giving up his swimsuit. Good show!
Mad Munk, where were you? Are you going to rebel and wear yours?
Beware, someone might snatch it, and bury it under the berry bushes.

OK, this is getting lame.......I'll stop now.

Hmmm, that's not really two meanings... a chair person is so referred to because he/ she sits in the main chair...

I dont think I have ever heard the word chair by itself used to describe a person who is chairing an event... but then I know you have very different word use in the states so please ignore me if i am talking bollox....

Sorry Kaptain,

People do talk about the 'chair' when refering to the person chairing the meeting -- been there, heard that !

Yeah but isnt it just an abbreviation for chairperson?

Post 30

Probably - but when does an abbreviation become 'word' in its own right ?

Good point, not sure really... I suppose when we all recognise what it is referring to and since people do with chairperson then it counts I guess?

So language develops - I feel sorry for the French, who officially have a committee to keep the language 'pure' (i.e. keep out foreign words & to generate new 'French' words where needed!) - this seems to just help put their language in aspic, where it would shrivel & die - luckily, in the 'real' world, the French adopt foreign words with aplomb, ignoring their own committee !

And some words mean different things in the various English speaking countries. Schoolchildren in England and America would be going to totally different places if heading for the head.

The one thing in common is they would both probably end up sitting down - but not neccessarily in chairs. They could both pass stools though.

Cheers, Loony
