It's from Walt Kelly's "Pogo".
An American political-cartoon genius of the 1950s who perhaps more than anyone besides Chuck Berry opened the hearts and minds of America to the future that would become the Sixties.

As a minor aficionado of Pogo who was raised on it, I did not know that.

I have searched in vain for the particular scene it which it occurred but have found a site where one could certainly ask. Their message board invites questions about specific quotes.

The original line was actually 'slick talking drummer boy..'
and not 'strange' as I had written earlier.
It was Albert speaking but about what I cannot remember. The harder I try, the more I remember that 'Bun Rabbit' once played 'snare' drum in the Okeefenokee Marching Band and for once did not say "I get to carry the hose!"
Funny that google produced 0 results when I searched for "the works of honest men".
