But why does Royston have the nickname of "brown town" ??? Surely this isn't the reason for it having much to offer as a place to visit?!?

It's to do with the supposedly high level of herion easyly on offer there. Doesn't do much for the towns tourism.

I work in the railway station there (check out my home page for my picture... yes, it's me from the ticket office) and the drugs problem is definitely imported from the Jackmans Estate in Letchworth. Look out for late teens - early twenties lads with baseball caps on their heads. Adjusted to fit stupidly tightly.
They hang around the phonebox, calling a 01462 number.
Then they get a train, sometimes with a ticket to Baldock but mainly without.
Then they come back after an hour (it's quicker to walk to the estate from Baldock than Letchworth) and wonder why we have locked the toilet because of "a leak".
We started putting a bit of tell-tale water on the floor of the toilet doorway and leaving it locked because of the number of sour-faced tracksuit-with-poppers wearing losers that went into the toilets in pairs and came out with glazed expressions under their greasy hair. Our leak looks authentic, and legitimate customers were shown into the railman's staff toilets if they needed to go. The leak usually "magically" fixes itself at 5pm, after the little scrotes have left the area.
