As did I, some delightful bedtime reading smiley - smiley Thoroughly interesting and well written, thank you. Saw a rogue curly apostrophe, but that was it. Nice one smiley - ok

I don't really know much about this, but I know that some parchment/vellum skins were re-used by scraping them clean of ink, since good sheets of the stuff was hard/expensive to come by. How common was this? I believe in the period just after the fall of the Roman Empire it was especially hard to get hold of good-quality parchment.

Nice one, Elentari. Not too sure, but maybe you copuld mention somewhere that the copying of religioous texts by monks was the central theme in Umberto Eco's novel 'The name of the Rose'. Oh, and a friend posted me the link to a link another friend had posted, thought I would share it with you:

Very well-written, Elentari. I enjoyed reading this. smiley - ok

The only thing I think it needs is a lead-in to say what book production was like before this period, and a lead-out to say what ended the period.

smiley - cheers Icy

Good grief, I should have previewed. smiley - blush
Just as well that the link doesn't work, as it's the wrong one anyway.

Well written and an enjoyable read.smiley - ok

In the introduction you could specify what area of Europe you're talking about - did the renaissance limit itself to the Frankish empire, or did it affect Europe more generally? You could also mention what parts of modern Europe the Frankish empire consisted of (like in the Lothar II Entry).

Bel - thanks for the link, I really enjoyed that! I'm not sure about mentioning the book, since it's set a few centuries later, what do people think?

Can you explain the Carlingian Empire in the main text, rather than a footnote? It's very important to the entry, and most readers, like me, won't have ever heard of it before.

Gnomon - time to move on

It's a straightforward Entry, and I think it should become part of the Guide.smiley - ok

Some nitpicking:

fourth century AD --> 4th Century AD

labourously --> laboriously

Header: Types of books -- make the B into a capital

One example, from about 813 AD has a rather -- add a comma after AD

There are also cases of books being stolen -- this sounds odd because a case of books is a collection. Can you phrase it differently?

Lupus of Ferrières, a monk whose letters have survived, mentions in one letter his reluctance -- I don't think you need "in one letter" when you've already mentioned the letters earlier in the sentence.

until the middle ages -- should there be capital letters on "Middle Ages"?

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
