It all started out so well.
I think that's a grand idea Rich .... would it save us leaving a welcome message at all - we could just come up with an amalgamted message and beeblecast it.

Hang on - why not come up with our own welcome message on video, host it on h2g2aviators.com and then let new Researchers view it as part of their ACE welcome?
In my defence now, I started typing this, refreshed and saw Fizzy had beaten me to it. so it's Fizzy's idea, but I'd be happy to help to put it together.

Oh give me a break Rich ..... it's your baby and I'll happily let you file for full parental rights.
Luckily I was working on a new message anyhow.
OMG the baby's gone!!!

To be honest I think I gave it to that man up there but he looks nice enough - he'll take better care of it than I ever could.
and someone said he is rich.

It's your baby, Fizzy. I have no intention of changing nappies
We could do this fairly easily, but I'm not an ACE. What I would need to do would be for you guys to decide as a group what you routinely tell newbies, and let me know. You could either come up with a script among yourselves, let one of the group take charge, or just let me have a list and I'll come up a script for you. I can then let you know what I think needs filming or produce it myself - either way, as many or as few of you can be involved as you want.
The Aviators is for all of us, you know - we're here to serve the community and are open to ideas. We can do anything you want

Rich I don't even really understand the beeblecast yet - I'd be happy to go along with whatever the other ACEs like and let you Lil and Bel look after the techie stuff.
.... and you can deny this baby all you like - but I'll drag you onto Trisha .... I was just voicing what you more or less said in your original post.

Ok. I confess to this unholy communion. I freely admit while stapled to Jeremy Whatsisfaces lie-detector that I am guilty. I do, however, lay claim to future privileges
The techie stuff is our job. Don't worry about the techie stuff. But we need to know what it is that you guys want to be in the clip, what advice you want us to give, where you want us to direct people to. So what I need you to do, if you want an ACEs clip, is to put your heads together and decide what is essential for the newbie. You tell me what you want in it, and I'll try to get it together.

Been busy updating this A18356826 (blatant plug) first time I've updated it this year, not done March yet, and am now knackered...
...and confused, again
Rich, first you said you don't to take newbies away from hootoo, then you (or Fizzymouse) suggest we send newbies away as soon as they arrive did I miss something there
'h2g2 in a nutshell' briefly explains various different aspects of hootoo, it's a logical place for Aviators etc to be IMO.

I was thinking aloud, really. What I meant was that it wouldn't be a good idea to send them directly to the Beeblecast, but that an ACE's AV page that linked back to h2g2 would be a good idea. We could tailor an ACE's page to show what you want and to link back to the site, you see.
It may not be a good idea to link directly to the Beeblecast - much as I'd love the traffic, it might not benefit the site. If you can imagine knowing nothing about the Post or the Aviators, the whole thing would just look a bit mad, I think. Links to the Aviators A13264670 and the current issue of the Post A29618427 (the Beeblecast issue, which explains the concept as well) would certainly help.
Sorry to be confusing. I often follow a logical chain of thought in my posts rather than thinking for a bit then posting the results

This has confused me a little .
I am currently spending a lot of time sorting my welcome page and tweaking it to get it just right before going live.
I understand that the new 'Ace Beeblecast' is just an idea at the moment but I hope that we can all still have our own 'Welcome Page', so the time I am putting into getting my welcome page sorted is not a waste .
The Beeblecast idea for newbies sounds a very good one. I feel that the best way forward is to keep the welcome pages which gives a personal feel to h2g2, but towards the bottom of your welcome page, put a link to the h2g2 Beeblecast, writing something like "For more information and advice about h2g2, click the following link".
I say put the link towards the bottom of the page for one very good reason, it will encourage newbies to read your welcome message first before clicking to the Beeblecast.
I will carry on writing and tweaking my welcome page, in the hope that it will still be used to welcome newbies .
I am also going to re-design my personal space so that it will help newbies find their way around h2g2 more confidently.

Nigel, we've discussed and agreed that our ace welcome should NOT link to an external website, but rather to some avaitor page which has yet to be created - and from there, there could be a link to the beeblecast. And I'm not surprised that you are confused by the idea of a 'one for all' welcome message. However, we will still all have our individual welcomes which we leave on people's spaces. It's just that Fizzy and whoever else is good at writing, suggested to write a welcome message specifically for the Beeblecast, and Rich offered to take care of the technical side of it.
Hope that helps.

'...but rather to some avaitor page which has yet to be created - and from there, there could be a link to the beeblecast'
Almost. I suggested linking to both or one of the Aviators page A13264670 and the Beeblecast Post A29618427. The page that we could make for the Aces would be an ACE AV welcome, and we could set this up on h2g2aviators.com with a big, direct link back to h2g2.

Ok, so I didn't understand where you meant the yet to be created page to be hosted, but then it was seven am when I read that.

I could put a big back button on the player page (might be a good idea anyway), but really we want people to see something of h2g2 before they see the external site, don't we?
"The difficulty is that you can say to newbies 'woo! Look, we do AV!' and then have to direct them to a page of text."
We could, if it's a *very short* page of text.
