I don't think that the H2G2 Freaks is meant to be offensive, it was started up a while ago but the founder left the site, so this might just be the restart account.

Intern,
I've just read some of your welcomes and you mention that an ACE will be along to welcome the researcher. No offence mate, but if you're welcoming people to h2g2 you're effectively taking them off the New Users list and us ACEs won't know to welcome said researcher

I'm not saying you don't, and at the risk offending you...well you're not an ACE at the moment, are you? And ACES *are* the ones who do the welcoming...

This has always been a problem.
Any post made to a newbie account clears them off the * list. So it meant we had to check the ** list which became impossible as it showed all newbies with postings made to them regardless of whether it was an ace or not, and there were so many on the * list that we never had time.
Spelugx wrote a great program that removed all newbies that had been visited by an ace. This left a list of newbies that hadnt had an ace visit (whether they had other posts or not) and all we had to do was ace the list. it was updated every four hours and meant no-one got missed because they had already been posted to by a non ace. He used the aces list to write into the program to ignore newbies visited by those U numbers.
Unfortunately he removed it to update the program and it hasn't been since. I suspect (and may be wrong) it was because it showed the aceing figures too.
The official newbie list needs something like that. Whenever a newbie is visited by an ace it removes them from the list, rather than any visit removing them from the list.

There was a question I raised in the Aceforum which was never answered, and it was that do non-ACEs really need access to the New User list? if it was for ACEs' eyes only it would solve problems such as people coming along and impersonating ACEs (and I don't mean you here, Intern), such as the recent case with Whowasi?.

That is the reason i have never volunteered to help out when the list is long as I know it messes up the list (plus it means I can watch you lot do it )
Someone asked that before about the newbie list being public access but I can't remember what the answer was Mind you if people visit the 'new this week' researchers from the who's online list then it will mess up the list too.

But it shouldn't be up to non-ACEs to keep the lists down. I have a good excuse - I'm in London for the weekend and don't have enough time in an internet cafe. What's everyone else's excuse? *looks around*

And I think this brings us back to the other thread...
As far as the newbie list goes they should see if they can have one that lists newbies but removes bt default those that have been visited by an ACE (sounds simple but I expect it isn't to incorprate it into the software)

I wouldn't think it'd be that difficult, just a simple Yes/No string or summat, but what do I know - I failed Programming!

Ford.....
yeh this non Ace did about 10 for you last night to keep the list down becouse Aces are just not doing the welcomes as i said before trying to be help full
whats every one els exuse.....
They dont need one if you read volunteer page they dont make you do anything they just ask and it is just that a Volunteer group
thats why in the other thread some thing needs to be done about the welcome situation i thought you lot was haveing a debait about it

Intern, it may be a volunteer job but you are asked to do what you can, not what you can be arsed doing from time to time. As I've stated many times before, it may be a volunteer group but it's still a responsibility. If I wasn't pulling my weight as a Sub-Ed I'd be asked to leave, why is ACEing so different?

Well, true, let's cover every situation eh? But I'm in a thread with T.B Falsename who is reviving the Freaks society at the moment, I'm not sure whether he's online right now but I might drop them a line to check whether it's them .
Other than that I shall excuse myself to go welcome some newbies

Andy Posted Jul 9, 2004
but some Aces only do the latter im affraid what they can be ed doing so thats why things realty need to change within the group
you will find the one's who protest the most(some might think its fine for the moment) are the ones whos cushy little number is going to vanish
its the ones who do all the welcomes and spend hours doing them that it is unfair to them thats why more Aces need to welcom
Key: Complain about this post
