They're based on the original h2g2 smileys - the whole look of them has changed now. But these were quite easy to alter in Paint Shop Pro or the like... and good fun...

I can imagine!
I remember the days when smileys were called "Acid Men" and were fashionable to have on pencil cases, rubbers etc, and 93% of schools banned having anything to do with them, including the wearing of "Acid Men" badges, the drawing of them etc...
How life changes...

Those were drawn slightly differently weren't they... they looked like stoned people.

Ah yes the Nirvana smiley is the true king of smileys. It cannot be bettered... it's a shame they can't have one like it on h2g2 but the BBC would probably complain that it's a copyright breach.

Son't even mention copyright breach to me i reactivated my page...placed it in GuideML...changed it so it would work + updating it!...and recieved an email tonight saying that i have to removed certain items (which have not been mentioned i might add!) before my page can be readded! So i am in the middle of writing to ask what to do and or complaining! I just hope that my page wont be changed so dramatically that i will no longer enjoy h2g2 as much & may end up leaving it after almost a year of happy use!

You remember Orwell's "newspeak".It was about reducing the amount of words and making them more "logical" so that people wouldn't think to much (simply because they don't have the right word to even think their idea). I wonder if with the smileys we don't have the reverse opportunity of thinking with things we would never have thought before, lacking the way to express it). I don't mean it's just about being able to transmit an idea you had in mind before, but really it's about giving you a new kind of ideas.
Whereas I remember well the time when on h2g2 we only had the happy smiley, the sad smiley and the fish: !

Perhaps it would be possible to use both of them. The old one definitely had something very charming.

you're perfectly right, I often used it to smooth what I was saying, in cases I feared it might be perceived as deranging.
For instance, in your previous message, Em, I would have had used it for "no offence". I don't know if other people understood what it actually stood for, but it didn't really bother me, as in a large part it was there for myself.

huh...I'll just take your word for that!
Ok i get what you mean now...like i use *g* for because its individual but have to explain to my friends what it actually means!
i just thought with a proper tail the old fish would have worked and looked much better than its replacement!

yes yes exactly
Look, perhaps we can do something.
I'll go look around the guide to see if the image of the old fish is still somewhere as a gif, and if yes I think I will advocate for its rehabilitation.
