This entry speaks of the 'natural' development of clocks in the 18th century (early in the section on 'Breadcrumb trails and hidden clues').
Clocks were greatly improved in the 18th century, culminating in Harrison's H4 watch which facilitated the measurement of longitude and hence the mapping of the globe, but clockwork driven by a spring had been around in Europe since the 15th century, and driven by weight and pendulum since the 16th.
