The single most compelling account the character that I know of is the medieval Russian fairy tale of Vasalisa (the original Cinderella) and Baba Yaga.
Vasilisa sent by her wicked stepmother to fetch fire from Baba Yaga, according to Vasalisas' account, is carried by one of Baba Yagas' men in a "...mortar, steered with a pestle...".
(The mortars and pestles most commonly in use in those days, in that part of the world, were 'stand up' types, usually stood in front of the dwelling and worked with a ole (pestle) about eight feet long.)
Similar one or two man conveyances have been devoloped and flown by NASA.
Baba Yaga lived in a "...house shaped like a chicken leg that stood on spindly legs and swayed in the wind...".
(Sound at all like a helicopter?)
Baba Yaga gave Vasilisa a skull, which she tooke home and placed on a window sill. "...fire came out vof the eyes of the skull and burned the house down..."
(A crystal skull perhaps, with a focus in front of its eyes.)
The ascension of Elisha into heaven, as reported by Elijah has also been frequently cited as evidence of an anachronism.
