Leicestershire (pronounced les-ter-shire) is located in the East Midlands region of England, surrounded by Lincolnshire, Rutland1, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire. The population of the county (excluding the city of Leicester) in 2001 was 609,579. The county covers an area of 2,084 kmĀ² (804 square miles). The administrative centre, County Hall is located at Glenfield, just off the A50, northwest of Leicester City Centre.
