Stupid Question
Mike A (snowblind) Posted Mar 18, 2000
Actually, I just remembered something about coloured text. One of my friends, Urchin, knows about this. I don't have a link to his page on me, but if you go to my homepage and find, in the list of articles, one called 'If the kids were united...' then you'll be able to get to his homepage and ask him.

Asteroid Lil sent me a thesis on this subject *^_^*...she is great.
It was all about hex colours, and the many dofferent shades and hues you could get by using different codes. It's quite easy actually. Anyone interested?

What is a 'web-safe color'?????
When selecting colors for web page backgrounds or text, it isnt a good idea to select hex values at random. Colors appear differently on different platforms, and different displays. Here's some simple stuff that might help. [cause I'm pretty simple--dont pretend to be an expert in any of this]
Display: Most newer systems will display 256 colors, or more, but older systems might be limited to only 16 colors. And if you create a page while displaying billions and billions of colors; the hex color you assign might look great. But someone who is only displaying 256 colors could get an entirely different color, 'cause their computer is not set to show the additional shades. So your page might look very different on their computer than what you had in mind.
Platform differences: Mac and windoze [oops, my biases are showing again] are capable of different colors. Both can display 256 colors, but they are 256 DIFFERENT colors. There are only 216 colors that will look [mostly] the same on BOTH platforms.
An explanation of all this is at:
http://www.tips-tricks.com/colors.shtml
And charts [that loads very quickly] displaying the 216 web-safe colors are at:
http://www.leeanne.com/browsersafe.html
and
http://www.cookwood.com/cookwood/html4_examples/4files/colorhex/colorcharthex.html
Linda Weineman is one of the 'experts' in alla this. she has a page at:
http://www.lynda.com/hex.html
A list of the 16 colors [Netscape 'named' colors] that will look the same even in the most primitive monitors, [and will display if you type in their names, rather than the hex codes: bgcolor="red"] is at:
http://www.utexas.edu/learn/pub/colors/
About.com has a great page on 'Using colors on web pages' at:
http://html.about.com/internet/design/html/msubcolor.htm
do a search for 'web safe colors' 'browser safe colors' or 'non-dithering colors' for more information.
If you use other than the 216 'safe' colors it is very likely that you will get unexpected results on different computers. [And even with them there is still some variation]
Hope this helps.

S Question of my own now. How do you make your text bigger?
Stupid Question
FairlyStrange Posted Apr 2, 2000
I would have thought the close tag would be .
I'd like to know the answer to your question, as well, Mike A. I can get the larger typeface with the "subheader" tags, but not the LARGE stuff I keep seeing around.
Also....how to change fonts. I see it done all over the place, but I haven't seen an explanation on how anywhere!

tag + font sizes

I'm sure Bruce will be here any second to make everything clear, but meanwhile, here's a bit that might help.
If you are using guideML the tag is 'cause you hafta close all tags in GuideML, and the way to close a non-container tag is by putting a forward slash at the END of the tag. That's why you got the ! error using without the forward slash.
To change the font size, the tag is: text here
The numbers inside the "" can be + or - 1, 2, or 3 to make the text larger or smaller.
Hope this helps.
