I am unsure how much more I can add to this. I understand that it cannot go into Peer Review even though it has been changed beyond all recognition, but I'll hand it over now! Thnaks, and enjoy.

It can't go into PR because there is already an entry in the guide on the subject, so this is an update, not a new entry. It therefore must go down the update path.

I'll be busy with a funeral and then holidays until 10 June, Fiddler, so I really won't get a chance to look at this until then. But hopefully somebody else will. If not, remind me on 11 June.

Have you got a link to the original entry?

It looks good to me, but you haven't mentioned that experienced players can also play with the dominoes upside down. My Grandad used to do this, and I think my dad can as well.

My son and I watch that programme from Netherlands every year when it's on. Shame about the presenters being idiots, but I guess there's not much you can say about a load of plastic bricks falling over.

They aren't traditional dominoes though - they're just coloured and they make lovely pictures, often ones that change as the dominoes fall. Could you mention that as you've mentioned the programme?

I thought I'd covered that here?

>>Dominoes used in these events are often coloured, so that a pattern, story or theme can be created, and are often televised. A couple of programs that have shown them regularly are Blue Peter and Newsround, produced by the BBC, in the United Kingdom.<<

If it needs more clarity, happy to oblige!

Hi G-B

smiley - sorry I'm at work at present, so not able to get online much.

Help would be appreciated, otherwise I'm pulling the entry, as I am really getting a little bored with it.

It appears it is the domino toppling section that is causing the major headache...

Can't see the wood for the trees at present, so a fresh pair of eyes would be a real benefit.

Thanks. smiley - cuddle

Possibly the most famous accident was in Leeuwarden on Friday, 11 November 2005. The Television Company, Endemol Creator of Big Brother, where attempting to break the Guinness World Record. A system of 750 safety gaps had been built into the set-up, using Breaker Dominoes, but a common house sparrow had managed to get into the building, and succeeded in knocking down 23,000 dominoes. The errant bird, evading capture, was subsequently shot by a marksman, causing outrage among animal lovers.

Gnomon - time to move on

This is a good entry, MMF, and there is a lot of good stuff in it, but I think it still needs more work on the parts that explain the dominoes and the basic game. It is obvious that you understand the basic game and all its intricacies, but I don't think a person who hadn't tried it would be able to understand your instructions. I'll try and highlight the dodgy bits.

"but in a flat two ended plane" -- I don't know what you mean by this.

"On the face of these squares are carved or painted dots, or pips, representing the numbers from one to six. There are also dominoes with a corresponding number of blank faces." -- this isn't very clear. How about,

"The squares may be blank or may bear carved or painted dots, or 'pips', representing the numbers from one to six. Each domino thus represents two numbers between 0 and 6, and there is one domino with each possible combination of numbers."

Your only description of how the dominoes are placed is "it is played at the corresponding end". You'll need to do better than that. Dominoes is not like cards where you just put the cards on the table. The dominoes are placed in a pattern, with edges matching. Can you describe this?

the player takes a replacement domino from the boneyard, hence the term bone - it seems more likely that the boneyard is called that because the bones are in it, and they are called bones because the white ones look like it.

"The objective is to play so that the sum of each end can be divided by either three or five, depending on the game being played. As an example, if the first domino laid is double-six, and threes are being played, then the player would score twelve, as 6 + 6 = 12. " -- I don't understand the first sentence, and the "for example" sentence doesn't appear to be an example explaining it at all, but an explanation of how the scoring works.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
General Style:

"Dominoes is an ancient game, believed to have originated in China, with records dating back to at least 1120 AD. It is believed to be much older than that."

I'd reword this is as:

"Dominoes is an ancient game, believed to have originated in China. Records of the game date back to at least 1120 AD, but it is believed to be much older than that."

The word dominoes is used too often - you need to vary it by saying "pieces" occasionally.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Typos etc:

called the ‘Waist’ -- change the curly quotes to straight ones

How to play Block and Draw Dominoes. -- remove the full stop at the end

The game is played between two and four players -->
The game is played by between two and four players

competitive Countries --> competitive countries

The Television Company, Endemol (Creator of Big Brother) -->
The television company, Endemol (creator of Big Brother),

where attempting --> were attempting
