H2G2 is free!

H2G2 is free because everyone is really nice and Douglas Adams invented it.
Also many people are a bit more clever than that.
Perhaps, when it gets big enough, there will be advertising on H2G2.
Maybe all this stuff's true.

A bit harsh. They Thik It's All Over is pretty good, and I like Radio 3...

The real reason H2G2 is free is that it's not lunch.

and it isn't free either.
it takes expensive servers (ask jim), large hard drisk drives, lots of bandwidth, and the editors salaries.
so if it isn't free, what do you pay for it.
you pay with the sweat of your brow, and the non-exclusive donation of your copyright, so that if the edited guide gets big enough to be worth publishing some other way (cd, book, etc) the section of the bbc which runs h2g2 gets to pay you nothing, and keep (hopefully) all of the profits from it.
so, tanstaffl still applies here!

I still stand by my assertion that H2G2 is not lunch.

Especially since the servers are currently chewing up all the bytes on a regular basis
