Lindisfarne is also known as Holy Island, a name given to it after the Norman Conquest because of its association with many saints of the early English church - St Aidan, St Cuthbert & St Oswald.
The name Lindisfarne was itself predated by another - Metcaud, a British (Welsh) name entered in Welsh tradition.
Lindisfarne is an Irish name meaning something like "the island of the (tidal) waters". The name was presumably coined by the Irish monks who came with St Aidan and was retained by their English successors out of deference for their teachers. http://pages.unisonfree.net/futers/places.htm
