Well, Ihaveblueshoes answered the question of the Babel fish, very well I must say. As for the question of the number 42, the answer is very simple. In Douglas's books he refers to the Earth as being a giant super computer built to find the question to the answer of 42. 42 itself was the answer, found by an earlier super computer, to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. There is not much further explanation in the rest of the Hitchhiker's series, but there are several allusions in the Dirk Gently series.
