Not true. hand tinting and printing on pre-tinted stock was tried. Color film was tested in the early thirties and the first color movies were documentaries and animated cartoons. "Becky Sharp" is considered to be the first feature filmed in color. If I remember correctly, it was a silent.
"Wizard of Oz" was in color and it wasn't make in the fifties. Instead, it was made in 1939.
