I'd like to see the "Linda" button reduced to a smilie, to use instead of asterisks in self-moderated posts...

And a "hands over the ears" smiley for when people are shouting...
You could expand that to the whole "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" set!

re: another conversation with Babel-17, a "Fingers Crossed" smiley might be useful too...

Sorry to be a pest, but as Muse of Lateral Programming Ideas, I feel I ought to mention this...
Would it be possible to incorporate "" as a Smiley? It would be a GIF, one pixel high by, say, 256 pixels wide, in an appropriate colour to show up in each skin. The idea would be to use it instead of a line of dashes when breaking up a long posting. I figure the average line of dashes takes up between 30 and 40 bytes in the database, while this would take four. Also, it's quick to type, and would look nicer on screen. The actual graphic, suitably compressed would be about 16 bytes and would only have to load once for every occurrence in the forum, which would compensate for the length of the "image" tags generated by the XML parser... (It wouldn't need an "ALT", either)

RE Peet's suggestion of a smiley for , I just use popcorn to break up a really long post, like this:
And then I just keep typing, paying no heed to whether anyone wants to read what I have to write

Arpeggio - Keeper, Muse, Against Sequiturs, à propos of nothing in particular Posted Jun 3, 2001
Hullo. I'm new. This thread is not. I didn't go back and read the last 6 months' worth of smiley suggestions, mostly out of sheer laziness.
I have tried, but I cannot make work out to , which is one I want.
Personally, I think a little Jewish smiley, holding its big Jewish honker, saying would be fun. As a person with just such a honker, I can say that. If we want to stay away from the religion Thing, what about a prissy little face, holding its nose, saying instead? is insufficient for all the myriad forms of disdain through disgust which need illustration.
I love . I haven't had a chance to say that in a long time. ... but where's ? (silly little face w/ grin and bubbles?)
Why all the Hallowe'en stuff? Is that a Rilly Big Holiday in the UK? (I have personal reasons why I hate that particular day, and would love it if fewer smileys were wasted on that...)
I know cup of tea has been mentioned at least ninety-leventy times, so call this the ninety-leventy-first.
Want . Not , but . Definitely need consoling , too.
Where there is , and , why is there not, ferheavensake ? is something we need? And yet, no ? How do you people come up with what is and isn't, like, useful/relevant, or cute/fun? I've been trying to reason out the collection of smileys, and they don't.
Another personally, I'd like . That is something like , only more smug. I don't understand . It sort of fails to make any impact on my brain.... is good for , but insufficient for . We need a . Duh.
is not really weird enough to be , though I throw in at random when I'm too to make sense. Remember 'Sorry... he's too weird to come to the phone right now...' from Outside the Asylum? We need .
How come there isn't a ? Is that image copyright or something?
could be useful. It certainly would come in more regularly handy than . And and are not even remotely similar.
Baffled faces, well on beyond are seriously needed! , , , etc. And and are trrriffic, but where in heck is ? and do not cover the ground would. We have and no ? I don't get it.
Is there anybody here who can Explain the Evolutionary Process of Smileys, so we ALL know where they come from, and how to get new ones made, or whether that is even possible, or whether this is a totally pointless thread? Now, please.
Arpeggio, for LeKZ

The Haloween and Christmas ones were designed back in the days when there were only about six smilies, and the PTB would swap the whole set over a holiday period just to give the site a "festive" feel
