Okay, I'm back. (Pauses for subsequent moans, boos, and shouts of disapproval.) I've been bouncing this around in my head and I think that even if we can't get the green smiley, h2g2 still needs at least one "hitchhiker" smiley. So I came back to the post thinking it would be just as empty as when I left and I would present my idea to the empty space. Shows what I know 
. But empty or not it's gotta come out so here it is. There's a smiley with his thumb out and the back half of a car driving by. Lousy description, but whatta ya gonna do. Gotta try for the green one first though.

The Green Guy (as I think he is correctly called (from the now defunct - well I can't find it - Project Galactic Guide)) must have first appeared on American publications, I can't remember seeing it on anything HHGTTG related until after the Infocom game came out.
He'd make a great smiley... But not before we get !!!

The ideas list for smiley development still exists at A651935. It is just that the staff are officially ignoring people for now and have removed lots of the previous ideas as well. Starting a new page is unlikely to help. You could try campaigning for a smiley there anyway. There is a remote chance the idea won't be ignored unofficially even if everyone tells you off officially on principle for posting despite the various "go away" messages.
