Macros

just wondering if you know about transfering data from one pc to another. I used to have seti@home running on a pc but have since upgraded to a newer one is there any way of transfering it across?

Also i found that it didn't really work out having it run in the background as it interfered with some other programs. I really want to eliminate as much as possible from my startup group and i prefer have to have screensaver disabled, again because it may interfere with some other stuff (although i could possibly look into this a little more)Can you run it as an executable when you know the pc is not needed rather than having it as a screensaver? its must be well over a year since i was running it so i can't remember the in's and out's of it all.

Macros,

With regard to transfer of data units, dont bother, basically the severs at SETI give each unit a time limit if they dont get your results back within that time the work unit is reallocated to another user. All you need to do is download the SETI@Home Client again and your off (don't forget to join The h2g2 SETI@Home Researchers Group thoughsmiley - smiley

If you delete the SETI@Home shortcut from your Start Up folder, set the screensaver option to none you can then stick a shourtcut on your desktop. The SETI Client then just runs like a normal app.

Hope this answers your questions

I found that IF you have a work-unit that is not fully processed, you can, after having installed SETI@home on a new system, simply interrupt the process of collecting a first new unit and then overwrite the SETI@home folder with the contents of the folder from the old computer. This is especially interesting if the old machine was almost ready processing the work-unit. It's a pity to see all the precious hours of work go to waste without getting the credit for it smiley - smiley

At both of my systems, SETI@home works continuously in the background and it never interferes with anything. However, I must admit that both systems have sufficient resources to do so: One is a 233MHz K6 with 96 MB ram, the other is a 400MHz K6-II with 128 MB. I also have set both systems NOT to use a screensaver, and there are almost no other tasks for them to perform, except for me being busy online with the K6-II, that is smiley - smiley
