Oldest Town Pubs

I just had an idea smiley - wowsmiley - zen.
Reading the current Unedited Entry A21382607 by Uncle Matt (the Hoopy), he mentions 'Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem', as being the oldest pub in Britain. (it's years since I've been there smiley - sadface).

I've got an Edited Entry on The Boot A25323527 - the oldest pub in Weymouth.

Why don't we create a collection of the 'Oldest Pub' in our towns?

I was thinking of doing an Entry on the Trip, but I could do one on the oldest pub in the 'village' I live in too.

Great idea Al smiley - biggrin

I guess we'll all have to go out and research them though.

Ah, me, what I do for this website...

'americans pretending to be canadians'

Reminds me of a conversation I once overheard in my works canteen, between a Canadian and a British person.

The British personm said, 'The trouble with you smiley - bleep Americans is that....'.

The Canadian person replied I'm not smiley - bleep American, I'm smiley - bleep Canadian. The trouble with you smiley - bleep Europeans is that....'

'I'm not smiley - bleep European, I'm smiley - bleep English!'

smiley - laugh

A collective entry or a collection of individual entries

The Nelson in Gosport has a tunnel that leads from the cellars out to what used to be fields, so the drinkers could escape the Press Gangs

And a ghost called Charlotte

I think the oldest pub in Hull is "Ye Olde White Harte" But I think it used to be a coaching inn, not a pub, if there was a distinction back int' day.

It's really nice, and being central and near the college has a weird mix of students, city worker-office types, people from the indoor market, which is just round the corner, and old duffers with ludicrously the bomb moustaches. Also it was where the desicion was made not to allow Charles the First into the city, thus starting the English civil war. smiley - booksmiley - alesmiley - drunk

I'll do the research and start writing it up, but I think a collaboration would be better for this and I've not got anything in the EG yet anyway so I think a more experienced researcher would be better for the job. The oldest pub in Hull has limited appeal, I think, opposed to an overview of antediluvian watering holes in general.

Well, why not make a start on it, put in a few links then submit it to PR. I'm sure people will chip in to help make it a worthwhile Entry smiley - oksmiley - smiley

Count me in, if we're doing it.

Sheffield's a disputed case though (I guess many places are). It'd be fun, trying to come up with an objective verdict.
