Greetings Peer Reviewers!

Just plugging a gap in the English counties set. Let me know what you think. smiley - smiley

If this makes it to the EG, can I have a picture of the statue of King Alfred in Winchester? smiley - grovel

p.s. When I started this, I had no idea I was going to be linking to Tutenkhamun, Antarctic exploration, Doctor Who or Test Match Special. smiley - weird

Spotted one potential typo:

Other famous Portmuthians include >portsmuthians?smiley - erm (i.e. with an 's')

Can't remember if you mentioned Portsmouth Uni.?

If not, then p'rhaps you could make mention of it 'coz there's an Entry on this currently going through PR. Then it can be linked to smiley - smiley I thought of it 'coz James Callaghan was the Chanellor at the time I rec'd my Chemi. degree smiley - smiley

Thanks Big Al. smiley - ok

Portmuthian: that's the way I've always spelled it. If you can find a reference for the alternative spelling, then let me know. The best one I can find is the PGS old boys entry on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Portmuthian_Club

If I link to Portsmouth University, I would presumably have to link to all colleges of further education in the county (and there are many). I do link to the Portsmouth entry, and I would suggest that this in turn links to the University entry (if that makes sense?)

In general, I've tried not to say too much on Portsmouth and Southampton, as they should have their own entries really. (Do we have any researchers from Southampton who could cover that town?)

smiley - ok Icy smiley - smiley (Disagree with what you have to say about HAVING to link to every F.E. College in the UK though. I think mentioning Unis is legitimate because they are the premier seats of learning in the country. Perhaps just say that Hampshire is home to two Unis, and then perhaps give a very brief description of each e.g. Southampton Uni is 5-alpha rated in a numbver of areas, and also has a Medical School. Portsmouth Uni evolved via the Polytechnic rom Portsmouth College of Technolgy. No need to say much else as P'Mouth Uni already has its own Entry in the making, and someone is likely to write a specialist one for Soton smiley - 2centssmiley - smiley

OK, thanks Al,

I'll add something if I can find somewhere appropriate to add it. Maybe a separate section...

OK Al, I've added a small section on Education in the middle somewhere. I've also fixed some minor typos (thanks Bel)

smiley - ok That's good - but for Southampton Uni could you possibly write it like this (ie with links):
The University of Southampton http://www.soton.ac.uk/about/index.html is one of the top ten research-led universities in the UK and has its own medical school http://www.som.soton.ac.uk/prospectus/

I liked it

did you know that Basingstoke is home to the tallest building between london and New York ?

A12479781 - Hampshire, England, UK

Post 12

Icy North

That must be the AA building. Thanks Jon - you're a very nice man for telling me. I'll add it. G**gle tells me that the town also contains the largest banana ripening warehouse in Europe, but you can have too much of a good thing, can't you?

Thanks Al. I'm hovering over putting external links in the main body of the text. I saw something recently about them not being accessible via mobile devices (can someone confirm?). If not, then I'll stick them in the references section with the others. For one thing, it shows where we are missing an H2G2 entry.

scrumph

Good rounded entry.

I do wonder if the armed services should be a section in it's own right - isn't Hampshire one of the key counties for regiments and stations?

My only other suggestion is a bit more about transport - you mentioned some of the roads in the intro and the airport in the politics section but not railroutes. Perhaps they could all be drawn together in another mini section.

Thanks Scrumph - good points. smiley - ok

Aldershot is a major Army garrison but it's not the HQ of UK land forces, which I think is somewhere over on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, so it's not the home of the British Army in the way that Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy.

Having said that, it would be interesting reading, and we don't have a h2g2 entry on the British Army, which it desperately needs, so I'll try and knock up something brief.

On your other point, yes, a "Getting There" section might help. I'll do that too.

smiley - cheers Icy

OK, there's a new section in the middle "Defence of the Realm", and another at the end "Getting There". I've removed a few existing items which duplicated the information in these new sections.

I've also mentioned the AA building in Basingstoke, and fixed some typos.

Over to you once again... smiley - smiley

As far as I have understood, you can put external links within the text and they'll work fine, it's just when you're writing them as a list, that they won't show on mobile phones and would have to go between the reference tags smiley - smiley

Post 18

Hi Bel! smiley - smiley

When you say "writing them as a list", do you mean "any use of external links within tags"?

A12479781 - Hampshire, England, UK

Post 19

aka Bel - A87832164

Yes, that's exactly what I meant - have you seen the example kelli posted somewhere ? The links within the text like the 170m Spinnaker Tower should work, but something like:

Goong Goong's homemade pickles
Stir-fry beef with hot and sour dressing
Roast beef fillet with sweet and sour red radish salad

Roast beef with radish relish

Duck and radish crostini with feta salad
Saak-er ghanto

has to go between the reference tags

Thanks Bel, smiley - smiley

OK then. Some of my external links are within lists and some of them are outside, so is it better to:

1. Add external links where I can and put them in the References section where I cannot (i.e. those that would appear within a list)

or

2. Just put all external links within the References section (for consistency).

Follow-on questions:

a) Is this a permanent or temporary situation?
b) Does this include BBC (non-H2G2) links too?

smiley - cheers Icy
