The seven deadly sins...
pffffft Started conversation Jun 23, 2006
I am not able to google the answer and am trying to compile a list of them, I can remember that there's murder and gluttony and adultery and avarice and I'm sure there was something about 'Thou shalt not covet your neighbours yak' or something like that.
Can anyone help out? or any suggestions for sins that wernet part of the original magnificent 7 but should really of been?

You are confuddling The Seven Deadly Sins with The Ten Commandments!
The Sins are as follows; pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, sloth
The Ten Commandments are
You shall have no other gods before Me
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
Honour your father and your mother
You shall not murder
You shall not commit adultery
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour
You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife
You shall not covet your neighbour’s house

Thankyou. Now the harder bit. See the office conversation at the moment is about the teevee series Lost - and how all the characters are guilty of at least one of the seven deadly sins and have been condemed to the island....

Can't help you there, I'm afraid. I have yet to watch a single episode (got them all just not watched them yet)

watch them. I had never seen a single episode until recently when someone lent me the box set of the first series. I was hooked and chain watched them all. All the hype and Lost mania aside, it really is quite good teevee

You could try having a go at the Virtues
The Cardinal Virtues:
prudence, temperance, courage, justice
The Theological Virtues:
love, hope, faith
The Seven Contrary Virtues:
humility, kindness, abstinence, chastity, patience, liberality, diligence
The Seven Heavenly Virtues:
faith, hope, charity, fortitude, justice, temperance, prudence

Werent some of the Seven Heavenly Virtues in a pop group once. I'm having a kind of vague memory of Faith Hope and Charity and a young martine mccutcheon. Or that might just be wishful thinking on my part.

You shall have no other gods before Me, (failed that one)
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, (failed that one)
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, (failed that too I think)
Honour your father and your mother, (probably failed that one too)
You shall not murder, (failed that one too I think)
You shall not commit adultery, (oops)
You shall not steal, (oops)
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour, (err probably failed that one too)
You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, (ooops)
You shall not covet your neighbour’s house, (errr dunno probably failed that one too) wow ten out of ten

I've heard Lost described as 'Metaphor Island', which makes it sound like USian preachy nonsense.
On the other I've heard that there's guy at the bottom of some shaft reading a copy of Flann Brien's Third Policeman which makes it sound like must see.

I once did a presentation (in French! )on les 7 pechés capitaux. And I chose to talk about Ghandi's take on them, which made more sense to me in today's more secular world:
"Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi, one of the most influential figures in modern social and political activism, considered these traits to be the most spiritually perilous to humanity.
* Wealth without Work
* Pleasure without Conscience
* Science without Humanity
* Knowledge without Character
* Politics without Principle
* Commerce without Morality
* Worship without Sacrifice"
Which seems to cover lottery winners, the sex-trade, nuclear weapons, the internet, New Labour, Enron and Man U supporters for starters

2legs' post reminds me of a church sign that was going around on the net a wee while back...
"Screaming 'oh god oh god' in your bed on a sunday does not count"
Or something along those lines...
Cant think why 2legs and sins/commandments made me think of sex... Reckon that boy and 'im 'upstairs' must have special skills...

8) Having a 'Bon Jovi moment'
I tried to snog a girl called Charity once. She wasn't having any of it. I had to settle for beating her brother at table tennis.

pride - I'm proud of who I am (even though it has taken so 40 years or so and I guess I'm proud of it too
envy - not really ... not anymore ... (shouldn't jealousy be here instead of envy - more negative!!
gluttony - not anymore, but I still like a pack of digestive biscuits with a cup of tea!
lust - all the time (on average every 20 minutes or so
anger - anger management courses are next on my list
greed - not any more ... I believe that money is like blood, it has to flow, otherwise it clogs and causes illness.
sloth - too busy to have this perhaps later in life!!
