Is it up or down?

If you have wet hands and hold them above your head, does the water run up your arms or down your arms?

If you decide your fridge is a little bit too cold, do you turn it up or down?

I was actually wanting an answer to the question. Preferably from a native speaker.

Oh. Er ok. Down, I think. I don't think the concept of the shoulder being the 'top' of the arm is deeply enough rooted in the language to be independent of which way up the arm is.
Does that make sense? Good, now tell me, which end of your car boot is the back? The end nearest the back of the car, or the end furthest away from you when you open it?

Depends on your piont of view, of course, like nearly everything else on the planet (why did I include the nearly?) Concievably, if you had someone in the car and someone opening the trunk (as it is called in the States) simultaneously, both the outermost and innermost end could be called the "back," resulting in serious confusion for the trunk/boot and causing it to require years of intensive therapy before it was comfortable with its identity again...whereupon some heartless, stupid humans would do it all over again, I suppose. Have a nice day.
