Updating Mepis Linux
HappyDude Started conversation May 1, 2007
I just upgraded from Mepis 6.0 to Mepis 6.5 recently so...
I booted from live disk double clicked the Install icon and selected upgrade (thus preserving my /home directories)
Once installed, booted into Mepis on my Hard drive and added a repository from http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ and installed the programs I wanted from the package manager.

** tip always keep a list of what you install, it makes upgrading so much easier
next I used the Mepis assistants to set up 3D support for my graphics card, to set up Beryl (3D desktop effects) and my printer.
Then into the settings menu and switch to British English for the user interface, ispell-british for the dictionary and made the Desktop look pretty and set up SuperKaramba.
Next install Oolite using Autopackage.
Finally I compiled a couple of progs from source (special mention here to Yakuake which I would recommend to any KDE user) **tip: When installing from source instead of the command "make install" use "checkinstall".
And that was me set until the next upgrade comes along.

Er,,, You called...?
This is all very interesting, but not much use to me as when I "upgraded" from the previous SimplyMepis to Feisty Fawn I also upgraded to a different laptop and gave the Mepis one away.
Apropos to nothing, did you hear that Dell have settled on Ubuntu for their laptops and desktop machines - Feisty Fawn is now available as a zero-cost OS option. And despite the fact they're not charging for it, they still paid some money to Canonical to be used for future development! Kewl.
Still no word on whether it'll be offered on their servers, though - they get big kickbacks from Micro$oft to put their server OS (Server 2007 at the moment, I think) on there.

Traveller in Time getting used to hacking a new XP system
"At the office we buy systems from Dell, they come preinstalled. It takes about two hours to get such system ready for normal use. This involves installing the company security suite, some dedicated applications and removing nearly as much addvertisements.
Most of the 'advertisements' come from Musof and Dell only Adobe and Google are external 'sponsors'. The worst part is you have to find out how and what to remove on every batch, seems like Dell craps something new every other day. "
