I've been using Fedora Core 5

It's basically the "easiest" b/c it's kind of the standard. So if I'm reading some random web page about how to do something, and it says "go find file X" it pretty much describes exactly where it is under Fedora Core. But I've heard great things about Ubuntu from lots of different people.

any of you mac users on the latest intel processor macs? If so, any of you using the Apple dual boot stuff to run windows on it as well? is it useable/worthwhile?

I intend to (probably) when I get a mac but I'm going to wait and see how OSX and the next OS work out - I'll continue to use the duel boot system if I think it is in my interest to do so.

Thing is though, most of games that I play regularly aren't made for the mac.
Not made for Linux either which is I why I dual boot Linux and Win2K.

It is probably only for games that I would have a dual boot on the mac, but I'm not so heavily into PC games as I once was so this is less important now, what I'm after is just something I can rely on to *work*.

I gather macs are rather stable in that regard and that is my main reason for considering the switch.

Shopping has been put off until Friday because I've managed to tear my hamstring yesterday smiley - injured and because we're expecting a visitation from the Gas man and Muggins has been selected to be present for that; plus I have a presentation to prepare for, so Friday it is. But come the 22nd, I shall be Mac-Happy. smiley - biggrin

Ictoan you might check this out:

for $5 a month you get the system with updates, lets you run all the big games available for windows under linux. I've had good success with it.

cheers arnie, I'll have a look from home (work uses websense (hah, what a misnomer) to block games sites).

The interview went well (I think) so despite my leg, we decamped to Meadowhall and bought the iMac.

Only one problem remains - how to get my files off the old PC? smiley - erm

Link them together!

I've got a win98 Pc & a mac linked on a home network. I put files I want to transfer in a public folder on the PC, then access them from the mac. Appleworks or textedit seem pretty good at reading most formats.

There are plenty of games available for the mac, although they tend to be more expensive than the windows versions.

Remiss of me to mention it - but we did manage to get the files of my old PC in the end.

BUT.

The farce ended in a fashion I could not have predicted but which was hilariously fitting. The strain of extracting the files was, it seems, simply too much to bear, and bearings on the hard drive gave up and sheared off in the process. This meant the hard drive was attempting to spin but was unable to. (a literal example of: 'the elliptical cam gradually sliding up the beam shaft and catching on the flange rebate, with disastrous results' smiley - winkeye)

There was, understandably, alot of friction beign generated, and this in consequence, meant that my hard drive ignited - caught on fire - was hurriedly extracted from the insides of the computer and flung out the window into the back garden and extinguished with a bucket of sand.

All of my files had successfully been transferred beforehand (smiley - wow) - but subsequently the coroner has informed me that recording "spontaneous technological combustion" is not a fitting memorial to go on a death certificate and that consequently the hard drive (08.03 - 12.06) will be noted to have met it's end by means of misadventure.

Donations may be sent to Dell Memorial Rest Home for the Technologically Crippled. No Flowers.

Maybe I've asked this before, but if the Mac is now using intel chips for the CPU, when you pay the premium to buy are Mac, aren't you just paying for the operating system? So in effect you're paying $1000 for an OS?

Is Mac pulling a windows/Gates like scam?

You're also paying for a standardised hardware setup, which should have better compatibility. Intel get away with this quite merrily with their Centrino thing as well.

Also you're paying for style. You get to have an elegant case, visit Apple shops, hang out with artistes, and generally thumb your nose at PC users smiley - winkeye.

It is possible to run newer versions of Mac OS natively on a PC, but obviously its not designed for it so it takes quite a bit of tweaking.

"You're also paying for a standardised hardware setup, which should have better compatibility."

I don't think that's true. If you buy a dell, gateway or any standard PC you're getting standardised hardware setup. Maybe not quite as good - maybe that's part of the Mac premium. But's it's not a large disparity.

Your PC ran Windows XP, it just died, and you can't get into Safe Mode? You can try to go into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during a reboot, then choose the right Safe Mode option from the menu that appears. If at first you don't succeed...

There also may be a Recovery Console application on your Setup CD that may be of use. It's cheaper than buying a new PC.smiley - wah
