I've not actually legally disowned them, but I refuse to talk to them, or have contact with them. Well, with my ex-dad, anyway.

I ASKED A CHINESE PERSON IF HE WOULD TEACH ME SOME BASIC PHRASES IN MANDARIN. HE DID SO OBLIGINGLY BUT REFERED TO THE LANGUAGE AS PUTONGHUA???. I NO LONGER HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONVERSE WITH AFORE MENTIONED PERSON AND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO COME ACROSS THIS SITE. I HAVE TO SAY THANX FOR THE CHANCE TO FURTHER MY KNOWLEDGE.
DUO XIE - THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Heya, Ill add you as soon as I can. Im currently investigating developing a Portuguese Dept so keep checking in to find out.
Do feel free to join in any depts though, regardless of whether you can speak anything of the language. If you want to then a good thing to have handy is babelfish.altavista.com
Oddly enough we dont have a Hebrew dept yet, only the actual thread. However I shall try and sort this out soon.
And FINALLY after all that! Welcome

Thanks - and since I'm at it I'd like to chuck in WLTP Arabic as well... just in case anyone drops by who'd also like to. I have a good basic knowledge in Arabic, but it still isn't good enough for me to be able to actually talk it.

does arabic have to be in cyrillics? If so we cant do it. I tried to make a russian dept once....it went very very wrong because all the letters came out odd.

Arabic has it's own alphabet, which does get all messed up (I checked once) - but it could work in transcription, just like Hebrew, which also has its own alphabet.

Oh dear... the natives are getting restless...
Thanks Kat You're a lifesaver. The broadband connection was sorted out this weekend; hopefully, if all goes to plan, I should have Internet at home some time this week... then a couple of months of solid reading
And THEN I shall run around this place panicking and tidying everything up. Although it probably won't have much effect, as it's not in too much of a state. Only, I was half-way through welcoming everybody back to the new designed place when I got cut off. Oh well.
See you soon, everyone *wave*

I've never heard of Mandarin referred to as 'Putongha'. 'Chinese language' in mandarin is Hanyi.
(Sorry for not replying sooner Enoha, I didn't see this new message, must've got lost in the blog!)

I'm told that Putonghua literally means common speech. Thank you for the site as it is adding to the little (miniscule would be a better word)knowledge that I have.
Duo xie - Thank you very much (?)

I don't think what you just said worked... It's better to just say xiexie (thankyou) if you don't know the grammar needed for that sentence.
