EMR's PS version 2.0

Friends, Romans1, countrymen2, lend me your ears! I will take the pretentious route and assume that you are familiar with the source of that reference: Marc Antony's famous speech to the mob from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. I'm quite fond of all Shakespeare's plays; I'd have to say he's one of my favourite authors. Of course, I have other favourites as well: Stephen Fry, not just an actor, is high on my list, as are PG Wodehouse, Douglas Adams and Oscar Wilde. In short, my favourite method of artistic expression is British comedy, whether it be through those excellent writers or the likes of the BBC's comedy.

I'm here to learn stuff, to teach stuff and to love life. I'd have to say that my life could be summed up as the desire to disseminate knowledge. I love to learn things and I love to tell people things that they may not know. In real life, I play Academic League quizbowl for my school3 and I think I'm one of the few people who actually enjoys every minute of Radio 4 quiz shows and panel games, because I might learn facts from them to help me in AL4.

On h2g2

Here the important thing for me is helping out with the Edited Guide, our repository of the best of h2g2's entries. To get into the Edited Guide, an entry has to be submitted to Peer Review, recommended by a Scout, edited by a Sub-editor and finally approved by the h2g2 Editors before it's put on the Front Page with the day's new entries. I have been involved in every part of this process with the exception of the final approval by the Editors bit. But I have written entries and put them through the queue; I have recommended entries as a Scout and subbed them as a Sub-editor. So if you need any info or assistance on the way the process works, do let me know!

I also edit smiley - thepost, h2g2's totally awesome newspaper of which I'm honoured to be a part. A new issue comes out every other week, so read it! Since this is my Space and so I get to be egocentric, check out, in particular, my occasional musings about the nature of h2g2. If you'd like to submit articles, fiction, poetry or cartoons to The Post, use the link on the front page of every issue, leave a message at the Post Office or contact me.

And, I have recently begun to assist the UnderGuide in my capacity as a polisher. So I am now proud to say that I do things for all three of the official facets of h2g2. It's an incredible honour to be able to help out in this manner. To finish out the explanation of all the badges on the right-hand side of the page, I completed an h2g2 University project on The Julio-Claudian Emperors to earn my 'University Field Researcher' badge. I also help test new releases of the DNA software for the BBC, hence the 'BBC Tester' badge. I'm not sure how many other people have six badges, but I'm incredibly proud of all of mine!

A list of all the entries that I've helped or written can be found on a certain page, to which I have just linked, as you can see. This is an attempt to free up my PS, which was virtually sagging under the weight of all those entries.

Real Life

You already heard about real life mostly: I'm a sophomore in high school, if you know what that means, but mostly I'm sixteen and all that entails. I try to seem mature for my age and like someone that you actually might want to associate with, but sometimes I get a bit too pretentious and it rather backfires. But my friends and I in the gifted programme at school enjoy ourselves being elitist and thinking that we're highbrow. As I said above, I play quizbowl, but I also play violin, viola and a variety of other musical instruments, I pretend to be an actor and I surf the net and the iTunes Music Store. If you want to know more, I suggest you check out my website, a fledgling document that will hopefully tell you what you need to know.

My Mission

After reading MT Anderson's young-adult novel Feed, about a futuristic dystopia where everyone's brains are wired to a sort of monster of an Internet which brainwashes them into caring only about the sitcoms and the fashions and buying things, I have determined that I have a mission in life. And that mission is to resist the feed. Please see the pertinent entry in my journal if you're curious. If you're interested in resisting the feed as well, take up our rallying cry:

Intellectuals of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your dogmas!6

That's All, Folks!

In typing the above header I can't help but think of the poster that has those words written over a black-and-white image of an atomic mushroom cloud. Now that's a depressing thought if ever there was one. I hope you'll forgive the general expurgation of images and jokes from this Personal Space. I decided that I was going to redo it and that I was going to redo it in a more mature manner. If you want a joke out of me, go ahead and post a message below, and I will give you the off-colour one about Spoonerisms that I heard on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue7.smiley - biggrin

1Or anyone else that feels like coming along.2Or women. This would include citizens of both Canada and the United States (of which I am a citizen) or citizens of the United Kingdom (of which I consider myself an honorary citizen).3I'm a sixteen-year-old female who attends an American high school.4In fact, on 20 October 2005, I was able to utilise what I learned about Mata Hari from the Radio 4 programme Whispers to answer a question. And regular listening to Just a Minute allowed me to identify the "Minute Waltz" at the National Academic Championships.5Well, not really, but I am the Editor of smiley - thepost.6Credit to my dad for thinking up the last word.7Which is, of course, my favourite radio show. QI is my favourite current television show, though I've never seen it — just watched the clips on the BBC Comedy website. My favourite show of all time is Blackadder.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
