I first read this when it heralded the new UG and I've come back to it several times. Every time, I want to respond, although I don't know how, and every time I sit here and my eyes spill. It's not just the story, it's how you've written it. And it makes me wonder about the shoulder I offer to those I meet in passing as well as those I think I know. Thank you.

Thanks for this.
As I wrote it, I told myself I was doing so to help others.
I don't think I was looking for closure. Some things shouldn't be closed. You just have to find the way to remember them positively.
I'm not sure whether writing it was intentionally cathartic, but I found some of that.
There was some contrition to work out as well. A very good friend remarked that he'd chanced on the piece. I asked him to say honestly what he thought of it, and got a shock when he said "You were nastier than that". At least he grinned.
Looking back, though, the reason today that I'm happy I wrote it is because so many people have been so thoughtful.
And you? I think you offer pretty good shoulder.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
