I always thought they were a very American thing - never ran into one over here in the UK anyway!
Great cartoon though, it reminds me of when I caught myself watching football...

They're not an Australian thing either.
The program wasn't actually called what I called it in the cartoon (that was just a good way of making sure everyone knew what I was talking about). But the rules were the same and it was a National competition, sponsored by a mjor Australian company.
Listening to the commentators trying in vain to talk it up was the thing that kept us going - very amusing because they weren't trying to be .

Oh yes.
Normally I take reality and bend it a bit to make the cartoons.
All of this was real.
