Well, this is not as complete as most of my submissions. I have submitted it early to give Researchers something topical to read over Easter smiley - smiley.

I was inspired to wriote this following a Radio programme about St Heneene a couple of days ago,. The notes that I attempted to take from it constitute the basis for this Entry.

Also, as I've said before, although not a religious person, I do have an interest in degree to which archaeology and modern science seems to corroborate or otherwise help us to interpret some of the events and 'miracles' in the Bible.

Also, my favourite girl's name isd Helen - so that is the name of my daughter smiley - biggrin.

Because this is premature, some of it appears to be in note form, and some of it might still be not quite accurate - due to me perhaps mis-interpreting other sources in my haste!. But I'm continuing to work on it.

I mistakenly read your name and the Entry name for a while, there, and was wondering when the explanation of Helena being the Patron Saint of left-handers was going to crop up in the Entry. Bugger. smiley - doh

It looks good - the only glaring thing I can find is that the Subheaders should be Headers. smiley - ok

And apart from that bit with the 'cross' it doesn't read too much like a WIP at all.

Hi Big Al smiley - smiley

18th August, whilst in the east it is celebrated, together with that of Constantine, on 21st May.

Dates need to be 18 August and 21 May

In 293, Constantius was made Caesar, or junior emperor.
I don't think Caesar means junior emperor? My dictionary says "the title of the Roman emperors from Augustus to Hadrian; any emperor or dictator.

smiley - ok Made those changes, BB; except for the 'junior emeror' bit, It appears that he ruled alongside Emperor Maximian, in a slightly subordinate posoition, if I understand things correctly:

Hi BigAl,
This is great. I have only skimmed (it is late) but I love what you have done. There are a few queries I have, not so much corrections as questions:
1. Mount St Helen in the States is also named for her, (if I remember correctly) but needs to be double checked.
2. Was the Bible compiled in her lifetime (was it during the Council at Nicea?) and did she have any role to play in that?
3. The placard on Christ's cross would have had the inscription INRI (Latin for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews - Iesu Nazarene Rex Iudem... again, from memory so perhaps incorrect)
4. You say the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is sacred to "six different religious denominations". I would reword that and name the religions (Islam, Judaism and Chrsitianity) and the denominations. Denominations usually refer to sects within a religion (eg Christian: catholic, protestant, orthodox etc or Islamic: Sunni, Shia, Twelver, Ismaili, etc)

I do hope some of that makes sense.

smiley - ta for that WN. I was almost kicking my self for not mentioning Mount St Helens as I was only discussing this with Leo Alpha in another context a few days ago. However, when I went to check on the origin of its name, it wasn't that easy to find. Eventually founbd it on Wikipedia which says it was named after a Lord St Helens.

Now smiley - run off to check the other bits.

smiley - ok I've added a bit more about the inscription in a footnote. It was in three different languages.

I think I'll leave my wording of 'denominations' alone as this is what another website says about it:

'Architectural affronts aside, there is a long history of battles among denominations sharing the church. Over the centuries, its controlling sects -- Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Ethiopian, Egyptian Copt and Syrian Orthodox -- have fought over practically everything'.

Matthew 27:37
Also, they posted above his head the charge against him, in writing: "This is Jesus the King of the Jews."

Mark 15:26
And the inscription of the charge against him was written above, "The King of the Jews."

Luke 23:38
There was also an inscription over him: "This is the king of the Jews."

John 19:19
Pilate wrote a title also and put it on the torture stake. It was written: "Jesus the Nazarene the King of the Jews."

Interesting article. I like it. But don't forget that the wording of the text varies not only between the Gospel accounts but also from one translation to another. You ought to name the version you're quoting. The ones above are from the New World Translation. The King James or Authorised Version is probably still the most frequently quoted, but you might like to try the very popular New International Version.

The way I have given the references, with colons between the chapter and the verse, is more common. It is also used in this entry: A9914268.smiley - winkeye

John 19:19-22
Pilate wrote a title also and put it on the torture stake. It was written: "Jesus the Nazarene the King of the Jews." Therefore many of the Jews read this title, because the place where Jesus was impaled was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek. However, the chief priests of the Jews began to say to Pilate: "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am King of the Jews.'" Pilate answered: "What I have written I have written."

Yes, but what was actually written on the titulus is very much incidental to the Entry on St Helena. I merely wished to convey that the exact wording varies according to the source one reads.

I'll correct the biblical references

Aye. 'Tis true, 'tis.

But whenever I have occasion to quote the Bible I name the translation I'm using. This is just a habit I've got into, I suppose. Not important.

Concerning the Milvian (Mulvian) Bridge battle...you mentioned it was one of the most decisive battles...why, please? Did it mark the ultimate end of Roman pantheism?...

I'm also curious about the claim to Helena's British origin. Obviously it's possible, if Constantius was in Britain at the appropriate time...

I'm fascinated now. Good job!
