I would like to join the Gem Polishers. It seems like just the job for me, since I'm a grammar freak.

Just don't freak out smiley - winkeye

We will, of course, be happy to have you join us smiley - ok Just a few things to do to make sure you understand the task and the UnderGuide at hand. Here are a few important pages you might want to skim through to understand the UG and the gem polishers.

A1092566 - What do the Gem Polishers Do? Also the linked pages at the top of the page are useful.
A1103626 - UG Processes (a bit out of date, but relevant)
<./>UnderGuide</.> - An overview
A1150147 - A Short History of the UnderGuide (useful for recognizing cryptic messages of old-timers on the UG group)

The job of a polisher, simply put, is to make sure the entries are presentable for the Front Page. It's not as intensive a dusting as the sub-editors. In fact, there are only a few guidelines to make sure you follow-
1- It must have the UG Logo linked the the <./>UnderGuide</.> page. The code for this is in one of those pages I gave you, I believe.
2- It must credit the author as researcher and you must tick the not-for-review box before it is ready.
3- You should add - (UG) to the end of the entry's title so that it is searchable.
4- Proper grammar and spelling. Spelling doesn't have to be British, it should simply be the spelling that the author uses. Same with grammar... there are some different grammar rules for America and Britain, so a British polisher shouldn't British-ize American grammar and vice versa smiley - smiley But don't worry too much about this.
5- Don't take things too seriously.
6- Knock before entering my office smiley - winkeye

Please don't feel confined to the gem polishing aspect of the UnderGuide, by the way. The UG eds could probably polish entries themselves - it's useful to keep the gem polishers around in order to get feedback on how things are going. Every once in a while, issues will pop up on the email group about editorial review or an entry - anything you could think of will eventually be discussed. Feel free to throw your two cents in on any issue or ask any question - the jaded eds always like a fresh perspective.

It'd also be nice for you to comment in the AWW <./>RF5</.>, but it's not a requirement of a gem polisher.

Now, once you're confident you're ready, email me at jodantaylor at gmail dot com (you can also email the UnderGuide editors address at underguideeditors at hotmail dot com if you want things to move quick - because my gmail sometimes acts up and I get lazy often) so that I can send you an invite to the UG Yahoo group, where the real business gets done. After the second Friday of a month, usually one of my co-eds emails the group a list of entries which you can grab to polish or assigns entries to certain issues. Any emails with the words 'Allocation' or 'Attention Polishers' you should probably read smiley - smiley

Long enough introduction for you? smiley - puff I need a nap...
