Never heard about the Tim Rice lyrics. What were they like, and in what ways are they better than those known?

Well, to be honest, neither set of lyrics reall makes sense if you sit down and look at them! Rice's last verse goes:
Touch me
Is there no one to touch me?
It was easy to love me
In my glamorous past
As I leave you
A shadow of the light I once was
May my memory
Sleep at last
I feel this is much more in keeping with Grizabella the Glamour Cat (a la Eliot) and her decline than what we end up with, and is more touching. Particularly 'it was easy to love me in my glamorous past'. Imagine both sets of lyrics as sung by Judi Dench (who was originally going to play Grizabella) and Tim Rice's just seem to work so much better. Personal preference, probably.
If you google, you should be able to find the rest of it, but I'd be breaking all rules to post the whole thing.

That's interesting David, I didn't know about those alternative lyrics.
Memory has never been one of my favourite songs from Cats. I love Mungojerrie and Rumpleteaser, Gus the Theatre Cat, McAvity, Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat (especially as it was in one of my reading books at primary school, complete with funny illustrations) and Mr Mistofelees (sp).
In answer to my previous question - Cats is touring and I'm planning to go and see it in Oxford this December - haven't seen it for years so that will be

oooh rubs together oooh another entry for me to get my paws on
was going to suggest that the person who writes this entry should look at what other entries on musicals there are on h2g2 and do something similar with this one.
And on another note I had my very own version of cats played to me last night as a couple of black and white wailed in the moonlight outside my house. At first I thought someone was screaming until i looked out.

Hey MK, if you should return. Take another look at your introduction to the musical please.
[The Play peers into a day of what The Jellicle Cats (A specific kind of cat, well pretty much any well kept cat,..]
I think this is exactly opposite the point. During the musical, the Ball is normally shown to be held in a junkyard or alley, and the cats are not well-kept, but city roaming cats. One hangs around the theatre, another around the restaurant back door, another roams the railway cars, etc. None appear to be kept at all, if the lack of mention of human owners or human pets means anything.
I would like to see you finish this though. You seem to like it.
