Entry: Horace Rumpole - A1032157
Author: Wildman - Nostalgia ain't what it used to be! - U225113

My first attempt at an entry. I've got a broad back, so pick your spot and plunge the knife home!

Seriously, I won't take it (too) personally - I'd really like to know what you think.

Thanks

Another entry I know nothing about. smiley - smiley

You use the sentence "Although fast approaching retirement age even when we first meet him, Rumpole is still a 'junior' barrister." and 'we' is a first person reference. The EG discourages them. smiley - erm

Since I don't know anything about the subject, I yield to the next researcher with knowledge of content smiley - winkeye

I know what you mean. When you copy text from my computer, it comes up with a bizarre &#19837 thing in place of apostrophes. A few of those slipped by...

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

It has the feel of something written for people who know about Rumpole. Maybe it needs to be clearer at the beginning that the entry is about a TV series character.

Maybe it should be retitled after the series: Rumpole of the Bailey?

Number Six

I agree about the title, although as the entry says, the 'Rumpole' series of books did precede the TV show.

I like this one... three suggestions - you can link to A744897 for 'The Prisoner' (Leo McKern was the best Number Two, if you ask me!) and A257302 for the Beatles, and finally (and I could be wrong here, it's just off the top of my head) I think the spelling of Leo's character in 'Help!' was 'Klang'. It always makes me laugh that they next two characters in the credits after 'Klang' are 'Ahme' and 'Foot' - Eleanor Bron and Victor Spinetti respectively, of course.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

The final paragraph should be an introduction I think. Other than that a very fine entry smiley - smiley

The only thing I was going to mention was the source of "She who must be obeyed" but you got that already. Very thorough!smiley - smiley

That looks much better Wildman smiley - ok

I think you'd better rephrase this though "...partial to spouting poetry, cheap claret, and small cigars." It rather gives the impression of Rumpole either standing at a urinal or laying on his back, and peeing pure claret smiley - bigeyes Perhaps it should read "...partial to cheap claret, small cigars, and spouting poetry at every opportunity." smiley - smiley

Very well spotted! smiley - ok

Funny how you can see things like that in someone elses writing but miss it completely in your ownsmiley - winkeye

I like your suggested re-phrasing as well.
Definately worth a smiley - redwine or two. (Chateau Thames Embankment of course!!)

Seems a great entry to me, I don't know a lot about this subject!

I've just had a look at the guideML and it would be great if you could cut down on the tags, and just use for when you want to break text down into smaller chuncks.

Z - I did originally try it with more tags but the skipped lines just seemed to added too much white space. I suppose it's just a matter of personal taste but I honestly prefer it this way.smiley - winkeye

If, by some miracle it ever gets picked then I suppose the Sub-ed will set it out as per the h2g2 standards, but til then I think I'll leave it. But I do appreciate the thought!

Thanks, have a smiley - ale on me. (Not literally please).

Do you know where El Vino's is? Might be nice to put a geographical location on it...

Also, mildly embarrassed to be pointing this out, but Leo was the last number 2 in the Prisoner (in the last 2 episodes), rather than the first - although he *is* also number 2 in one of the first ten episodes.

I'll get me anorak.

(Although I'm mildly reassured that I can't name the episode where he first appears...)

Well spotted Number Six! - Although, with a name like that, it should be expectedsmiley - biggrin
I've also added a location for el vino's (might buy you a smiley - bubbly there someday?)

Dr Trout - I love your article, I thought about adding something about 'the golden thread' into my entry but there is absolutely no way I could have done anything like as good a job as that.
I'll have to do some thinking about this as I don't really want to go into great, graphic details about the seperate parts of the Rumpole series or the article will get too long. For instance I haven't mentioned the other members of Chambers etc...
What I would really like to do of course is link to your article but I'm not sure what the best procedure is for that, are you expecting to put yours up for entry or what? perhaps you could offer some suggestions please. smiley - grovel

Wildman

Wow, I just saw that I'm well up the stats for longest posts today, and I'm due in the pub as it's my night off, I'll be back later, Thanks againsmiley - run

Thnaks. I agree that the legal principle could and maybe should constitute a separate entry in itself ... I've dabbled with it over there but it's far from ready. However, please feel free to use whatever you want at this stage, I wrote it for you.

Otherwise, your dilemma is difficult ... does Rumpole of the Bailey include the other characters or only Rumpole himself? I suggest that as it's fiction, and finite, then the entry should give us a brief of the others, inter alia, Erskine-Brown, "Portia", Guthrie Fetherston, etc.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
