Entry: Tic Talk-An Informative Essay On Tourette's Syndrome - A1012203
Author: **katelyn** - U220589

This is an entry by one of Prof. Burnham's students. It will probably need some work and I don't know if she's still posting to h2g2 any more, but even if she's not around to make any changes, I reckon this is a good-looking entry, and as far as I can see, we don't yet have one in the EG about Tourette's.

Even if it lasts the regulation two months in PR and is then sent to the Flea Market, it would be a good one for another Researcher to pick up and work on smiley - smiley

McKay The Disorganised

Don't like the title but other than that, we could have a winner from amongst Prof Burnham's students. - Wasn't the challenge to get something into the edited guide ?

It was, and I think at least one has made it, or at least, been recommended, so far.

Anyone else care to comment on this entry? Could it be edited without going to the FM?

I know it looks OK, but no one has vouched for the facts, and to put an entry - especially one on a medical condition - into the EG without checking the facts would IMHO not be a great idea.

Is there a doctor in the house?

Gnomon - time to move on

The facts in this entry match up very well with the article on Tourette's in Encyclopaedia Britannica. I can see no reason to withhold the article just because the author is no longer a regular h2g2 poster.

I think the entry is good and should be picked. The sub-editor can tidy it up, since it needs no major changes.

A few minor ones:

I don't like the title.

"inherited by both parents" should surely be "inherited from both parents".

Well I think there might be certain problems with this entry that someone in the know would spot fairly easily. One thing I noticed is that although it is titled 'an informative essay' there are a number of areas where it is frustratingly uninformative.

For example, the very important area of diagnosis is skated over very rapidly, as I suspect the author knows very little about this. It isn't as though information on diagnosis is unavailable - see, for example, http://www.tsa-usa.org/research/guidetodiagnosis.html

Diagnosis really is crucial to an understanding of this condition to the level we have come to expect of Edited Guide entries on medical and other scientific topics.

I would just personally feel more inclined to be a bit more lenient towards an entry on mushroom cultivation in Richmond Virginia (or wherever it was) than I would towards this one. But of course I am not a scout.

I feel that there is just too much basic information missing to present this to a sub in its present form, and what information there is does need to be checked and okayed. Further work should be done, and that further work would need to be peer reviewed.

This may of course turn out to be a minority view. Let's see if we get any others.

I'm in agreement with you about questioning the accuracy of the entry Bels, which is why I Scouted it for PR in the hope that someone can verify the facts smiley - smiley

If no-one wants to recommend this one without some more work, who wants to propose a move? I'm not sure if I'm allowed to that seeing as how I submitted the entry smiley - erm

Elephants? Or Just Niwt?

I like this entry. It would be better with proper breaks and a boring title like "Tourette's Syndrome" though.

I can't propose a move because I'm not a Scout anymore. But if it ends up in Flea Market...smiley - smiley

The title, unfortunately does need to be shortened. Something like Tic Talk-About Tourette's Syndrome"

If it's been scouted in its present form and rejected (as I gather it has by looking through the thread), then it seems sensible to second a move.

Unless an interested Sub come forward to claim it?

I don't feel inspired this time, ZSF. I do have to feel inspired, you know. It's my artistic temperament, that of the etiolated aesthete, with such eleemosynary promptings of the chthonic muse. I just know you'll understand.
