I live in the suburbs. We are surrounded by forest preserves and open spaces. The roads have encroached on the wildlife and it is not uncommon to see various 'road kills'.
This morning as I was driving to work I saw from a distance what appeared to have been a dead deer with a fawn standing over it. As I got closer, I realized the deer was too far from the road to be considered road kill. The 'fawn' was actually a coyote that was devouring the dead deer. There was a gaping hole in the deer's side. I do not know if the coyote chased it down or even if coyotes could chase one down.
I know this is the way of the wild. But it made me very sad.
