I used to prefer the term 'freelancing'; even had a registered company name 'Freelance Productions'. That way if anybody noticed my apparent inactivity and asked about my employment status, I could say (somewhat ironically) that I was minding my own business.
These days I am often surprised to hear myself saying out loud, "Oh I'm sorta semi-retired these days", because nothing has really changed, work opportunities have always been rare (feast or famine) in such a small market, even for a triple threat (actor,writer,producer) like myself.
Oh, sorry, didn't mean to butt in. Carry on.
