A Conversation for The Plight of the Boston Red Sox Fan
Sox, socks or stockings
Doogyman Started conversation May 2, 2003
British readers might be interested in knowing why a sports team would be named after "sox". In the early days of baseball players wore different coloured uniforms based on the positions they played. But all players on a team wore the same coloured stockings, thus, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Redlegs. In those days the uniform pants ended just below the knees, so there was a lot of stocking showing. Today most uniform pants go down to the shoe tops, so the "sox" don't show anymore.
And one note about "The Babe" -- the Yankees decided he was too valuable as a hitter and he didn't pitch for them, even though he was a darn good pitcher.
