One should add that a "Berliner" - the doughnut thingy - is called a "Berliner" in almost all parts of Germany, except for - Berlin, where it is called a "Pfannkuchen". Which means that the people listening to Kennedy's speech probably didn't get the joke. And it also means that, "Pfannkuchen" being the term for pancakes in almost all parts of Germany, they had to invent another word for pancakes in Berlin: "Eierkuchen".
