A Conversation for The Stone Roses - 'The Stone Roses'

I was so pleased to see that there was an entry for one of my all time favourite bands, The Stone Roses, that I had to read that before doing a single other thing!

Unfortunately there ws almost immediatley a glaring ommision from the entry. Where was Mani? As I understood it, Andy Couzans actually played rhythm guitar and Pete Garner played bass. Couzans walked out of the band in 1986 after it was announced by John and Ian that, as they wrote most of the songs, they should get most of the royalties. Pete then left the band in 1987 and was replaced by Gary "Mani" Mounfield. So by the time they came to record their album in 1989, the band was down to the four guys that most people think of as Thre Roses. Ian, John, Reni and Mani.

Its a damn shame that such an excellent article on this influential band should be marred by what, to most fans is a basic fact. sorry, but thats my thoughts on it. smiley - sadface

Don't be sorry about pointing out the thing about Mani - how I missed that I will never know. How embarrassing... I shall endeavour to have it rectified this instant!

Cheers, thanks for mentioning it.

Yes, it was scandalous that there wasn't any. It's odd, you forget what a brilliant album it is, then kind of rediscover it every couple of years.

damn, re reading that just made me realise how much work I need to do on my own attempt at an entry. by the way...I wouldn`t describe "Elizabeth" as some sort of death threat. the Roses were out and out anti-monachy and it was the queen it was aimed at. well, not a death threat as such maybe, but they sure as hell would have been glad to see her go. now I better go read my own work. lol

Hey Atari

While you're here, is there any chance you could write off to the Towers and get an error in this entry corrected? In the notes of I Wanna Be Adored, the bass line belongs to Gary 'Mani' Mountfield, *not* Andy Couzens. God knows why I put that in, but happily it was pointed out by Netty earlier in the thread.

Netty

I did only describe it as *seeming* to be some kind of death threat, which any stanza containing the line 'It's curtains for you' would appear to be. It would actually be excellent to see a more definitive history of the Roses. Perhaps you should write it! You know loads more than me about them. Beyond the immediate circumstances of the first album I know little other than the court cases and the Silvertone business. They are a great band with a massive unsung influence on the music of the '90s, and I'm not really sure that this entry tells their whole story. Which, in my defence, it didn't set out to do.

Cheers!

Hey cool, I will. Have you read 'England's Dreaming'? The best music/social biography I have ever read.

no I`ve never heard of it. who wrote it? I might try and get it...as long as my credit bill isn`t too high at the mo. lol

Jon Savage wrote it. Essentially, it's the story of the Sex Pisols, Malcolm Maclaren and punk, with some pretty grim insights into Britain in the late '70s.

Green Day. Saw them at Reading Festival '99, they were excellent. Think it was '99 anyway. I tend not to remember a great deal about festivals...

Saw the Roses at Eel Pie Island, which was fantastic, and at Reading, which was just absolutely dire. Wish I hadn't seen them the second time, to be honest. Horrible.
