Eid ( 'Aid, plural 'ayyaad ) means 'festival' in Arabic. So when referring to the festival occuring at the end of Ramadan it is more accurate to call it 'Eid ul Fitr' ( fitr meaning to break {fast} ) in order to avoid confusion with Eid ul Adha which happens at the end of the Hajj.
